It's funny that everyone is suggesting a sweeter wine to start out with. I definitely like the dry, earthy wines more than the sweet ones. As for dessert wines, those are way too much for me.

My most memorable wine was a Bordeaux I had with dinner at a restaurant a number of years ago. It was crazy expensive. You know how wine snobs talk about "earthy undertones" and "terroir," and use other arcane terms to describe the experience? Well, prior to having this wine, I thought that was all BS. But with this wine, I could taste it. I could taste the complexity. I could taste the earth in which the grapes were grown. I could feel the texture of the sediment in my mouth. It was amazing, and I've never had anything quite like it since.

I was going to say all of those arcane Smile terms but held back. My FIL is a certified sommelier and wine enthusiast. Thanks to him, I have had the absolute pleasure of tasting hundreds of wines. Wines are as wonderfully complex as you say! A gravely, chalky, Sauvignon blanc is heaven to me. Presbyguy loves those Bordeauxs that smell like manure!

Anything from this vineyard is always great. They have some very affordable pinots that are exquisite! http://www.elysewinery.com/growers.html
But NapaValley isn't everything. Sonoma County produces amazing wines too. And many things from the Willamette Valley in Oregon are wonderful. Cabs and Chardonnays from California are mostly VERY fruity ( Blech). There are some Chardonnays that are "aged" in metal barrels instead of oak which makes them more palatable to me. Anyway, drink what YOU like! Smile When I get over my cold, I will raise a glass to you Trapped!

RE: I Tried Wine
The tannins in red wine have health benefits. Curiously, those same tannins are what people tend to be allergic to.

I recommend a white wine to a newly because it has a sweeter, crisper taste (as white grapes have a crisper taste than red grapes), and also because you can generally chill white wine as cold as that pitcher of tea in the fridge. Reds you generally serve at room temp.

For the virginal drinker, you could make the case for a wine cooler for entry level. For someone expecting to enjoy the beverage as they would a soda, wine coolers cut the difference.

If they are intent on getting hammered, Sangria party! Make sure you invite me.

Sake - Japanese rice wine - goes down almost as smooth as water, with just a very light hint of something alcoholic in it. Drink it at room temp or a tad warmer. Careful, it sneaks up with ya! 1 drink will get ya social. 4 drinks will get ya faced.

The only pro to white zin is that it comes in very, very cheap boxes.

Well we had 8th hour today and I tried a few bud lights and right now I am trying a capn morgan and diet iced tea. Tongue
If you are not a teacher, 8th hour is what follows the end of a school day on a friday or the day before vaca starts.

If you ARE a teacher, you know very well what 8th hour is! There are 7 periods or "hours" in a day. 8th hour is the go up to the legion time. Tongue

That's what I bought at the Class Six (military liquor store) for the Catholic parish at the overseas base I worked. I was a good Baptist girl who worked as the Parish Coordinator for the Catholics. It was humorous to have my shopping cart filled with 6-8 big bottles of white zin. I was the one with the credit card, so I got to do it.

RE: I Tried Wine
So far in the past few months I've gotten through a bottle of Moscato, Zinfadel, Pinot Grigio, and Cabernet Sauvignon. I really like Moscato! But I'm trying not to go crazy with the dessert wines and stick with more of the red wines.

PresbyGirl - you would be AWESOME to go wine tasting with.

Senda, if you are trying reds, get a good argentine Malbec.

There were 8 class periods in the day at all the schools I worked at. This made the first sentence of your post read much differently. I thought those middle schoolers finally drove you over the edge! Tongue

RE: I Tried Wine
hahahaha! 8th hour starts when the work day is done. 3:15 on Fridays or "breakaway" days.
There is a group of about 4 or 5 of us that tries to get up the local small town legion or eagles club once or twice a month on a Friday for a couple of drinks and unwinding. Yesterday we had probably 20 staff people up there! It doesn't always work because usually there is basketball or hockey or drama practice or something. The days of nothing going on for most staff members are few and far between so we relish them when they come!
