Who would be laughing then?? Another thing, if someone died in a car crash, it was their time to go. "Funny, you're the broken one, but I'm the only one who needed saving." |

RE: death if you don't
This is a sad mantra that is commonly spewed in fundy pulpits. Exposed to the bare bones it really is nothing more than a scare tactic, based in bad theology, designed to control people. I am ashamed to say that there was a time I used it in the pulpit because you could get a "response" (i.e. fill the altar). I remember the sense of power that it gave me to be able to control people like that. It hurts thinking about the damage I cause and I wish I could go back and time, grab my former self in the pulpit and drag me out. I am so thankful for grace that delivered me from that ugliness.

RE: death if you don't
When my husband got saved he was really excited and on fire for God, and thought he was called to preach. Our former pastor really encouraged him to go to bible college. Then we got married, I got pregnant, and my husband changed his mind. He decided to join the military. My pastor said that we were out of God's will, "God doesn't change His mind", ect.. and that if he didn't go to Bible college, God might take our unborn baby. He worded it in this way like he was concerned "I really wouldn't want anything to happen to your precious child if you were directly to disobey God's call on your life.. maybe you should go read Jonah, and think about it.."

Ahh yes... the Jonah card. A fundy favorite to get people to do things they really don't want to do.

RE: death if you don't
Yeah, I know how you're feeling, Something Fundy. I'm a woman with grown kids and grandkids. It's Sunday. There's a 4 hr. sale at World Market on olive oil which I could really use. But I'm not going to go--because it's Sunday and it's on a very, very busy road in Greenville and if I were to die in a car wreck there, people would probably say it was because I was out shopping on Sunday and that it was also because I was greedy. So, I'm not going. Sad, that my weird upbringing (my whole life actually) has so messed me up.
