Banned Books for Research
A friend recently told me about an experience she had at the Fundy K12 school. She chose a secular book to read for a report on a historical figure, but the teacher rejected this book because it was not written by a Christian.
My kids and I just discussed this in light of our Logic studies and have decided Non Sequitur: Ad Hominem and Poisoning the Well applies. Opinions? I suppose anything that clashes with A Beka's rather biased views of history are forbidden. SFL: Banning research books not produced by them Logic FAIL |

Banning a book because it wasn't written by a Christian?
So these kids were only supposed to draw their new learning from people who all think the same? Wow, there's some mind expansion at work. Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.--Howard Zinn |

Wonder how they feel about the Old Testament. Or does that get a pass as it is the Word of God.

RE: Banned Books for Research
If this fundy school was consistent in their position on this, they could not read anything written by Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, William Shakespeare, Homer, etc.
And they call this education? I doubt the teachers at the school are consistent about requiring Christian authors for research *hoping there are a few decent teachers there*, but this teacher simply did not want their historical hero shown in a more realistic light. |

"How can anyone teach truth unless they know the author of truth?"
Yes, I have had that said to me. Anti-intellectualism from a person with several earned advanced (theology) degrees is a strange thing to see. Its a dangerous worldview, even though I do understand with and agree the presupposition that it is derived from, that from an apologetic standpoint all truth is God's truth. That does not mean that those who do not "know God" cannot and do not understand aspects of that truth, and borrow it even in their arguments against the existence of God. That does not mean that those people cannot communicate truth, it means they cannot communicate all truth - which makes sense since no one else can either. Making simplistic overgeneralizations like this fits with their desire for a safe, easy, black and white world without messes or complications or nuances. It's easier to classify an author as "bad" and completely dismiss him than to view each book individually, judging it on its merits, realizing the good and discarding the bad. It takes patience and time to do that; it also takes humility to be willing to admit that you can learn from someone with whom you do not agree. "Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

Its also a great argument against public schools and colleges... Which has the added benefit of propping up your failing institutions on the backs of people who cannot and should not be going into financial circumstances that are unwise while trying to uphold some man-centered standard that is based in the worship of an institution or a man rather than any reasonable standard of truth.
