Harry Potter
Yes, I'm THAT much of a fundy that I'm just now reading the Harry Potter books. It had been good so far up to last night. Last night I read the chapter about the defeat of the troll* and that was by far the best chapter in the book to this point. There were several items I wanted to put as my FB status.
Probably will if I have time to be on FB tonight.(* - Sorry if this is a spoiler, but if you didn't know that yet, you are more fundy than me. Or at least more out of touch with pop culture.)

RE: Harry Potter
Haven't read the books but I've now seen all but the last movie. Enjoyed them, especially after things started picking up in Goblet of Fire.

RE: Harry Potter
The main reason I decided to read the books is because I had seen all the movies except the last 2 part movie. I loved the movies, but I mentioned to someone who had read the books that Ginny was my favorite character and I was STRONGLY advised to read the books because Ginny was so underplayed in the movies.
So now I'm reading the first one.

RE: Harry Potter
I thought Ginny was a great character as well. I actually liked her better than Hermione even though she's had much less screen time. I connected with her character more. I'm looking forward to seeing the last film, especially since her mother, Molly, gets to do some magic-weilding.
As I'm sitting here, I realize that I really connect with the Harry/Weasley family dynamic. Substitute Muggles for my fundy family and Weasleys for my surrogate family here and its practically the same thing. Except for the Ginny part since it would pretty much take an act of God for her to see me that way. Ah, life is so much harder than fiction. boymom: What in the thelogical region of eternal punishment is a daddy-daughter ball? amyrose5:No one is in charge around here. Except maybe the rabbit. RE: Harry Potter
I read the whole series a few years ago. Enjoyed them. Have fun, Paul!
I also let my then 11 year old daughter start reading them. She devoured them! After she read the books, I let her watch the movies, mostly on DVD, but the last three we watched together in the theater. "Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

RE: Harry Potter
I've purposely held off watching the movies because I wanted to read the books first.
But the other night I turned on ABC Family and The Order of the Phoenix was playing so I watched a scene or two. I get the impression that the movies are best enjoyed after reading the books because there just isn't time to do _everything_ that is in the books. What I watched felt severely abridged and a little more...slapstick (for lack of a better word) than the books. RE: Harry Potter
It's kind of like a "highlights" reel. Nuances and details are missing.
I liked the movies too, even though they weren't exactly like the books. "Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

I'm sure they're very enjoyable in their own right but I'm still glad I'm reading to books first.
