The sequel to the "Princess and the Goblin" is the "Princess and Curdie". It's much darker than the first book and the ending is bittersweet. It's interesting because it's the only McDonald children's book that lacks a sense of "childhood innocence".

@PW
I've read The Giver, Percy Jackson, and books by Robin McKinley. So I'll probably like the rest of the books on your list.

Thanks for the ideas everyone!

The Enders series is very good.

Lord of the Rings, Narnia. Watership Down is great.

PW: "The Giver" is amazing. On my list of favourite books ever. You evidently have very good taste...I'll have to track down the other books you recommended. If you like YA literature, a recommendation in that field is "The Diary of Pelly D" by LJ Adlington. I'm far too old for YA stuff nowadays but I loved that book and still do.

All...read China Mieville. Seriously. I'd recommend "Perdido Street Station", his short stories, "Kraken" and especially "The City and the City" which is one of the best things I have ever read.

One of my earliest experiences with sci-fi was the Tripods series by Samuel Youd (under the pseudonym "John Christopher").

Those are really quite excellent reading on the 8th grade level or so.

Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Hinlein. One of sci-fi's absolute classics, IMO.
The Borribles by Michael de Larrabeiti. A fantastic children's fantasy
Tailchaser's Song by Tad Williams. Beautifully written fantasy epic about cats (and I am a cat person).Smile
I, Robot by Issac Asimov. Another classic

The only Sci-Fi/Fantasy books I was exposed to as a kid were by Robert Heinlein, Andre Norton & Tolkien. Tolkien is still one of my favorite authors; the rest I don't care much about. I don't care for Sci-Fi movies either except for Star Wars (all 6) and Star Trek II, III, IV, & VI.

The Borribles! Childhood memories...ah, those were brilliant books. I was a rural Scottish kid and I wanted so badly to be a Borrible.

Ender's Game--begun last night, finished about five minutes ago. And I'm a slow reader. Thanks again, forumers. Smile

RE: What is your favorite fantasy/sci fi novel?
Ender's Game is on the top of my list. There's a whole series with it, but Ender's Game is the best of the set.

The Princess and the Goblin and The Princess and Curdie are pretty good.

I love The Giver, too, but not the sequels - they are just not as good.

The City of Ember series is decent, as is the Percy Jackson series.

Of course I would add Narnia, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter to this list. Love all three of those series.

argh, I wish I had my books here with me. When I had my classroom I kept a ton of fantasy series on my shelf. I will admit that Dekker's "Circle" trilogy - Black, Red, and White - are not bad, but I have heard mixed reviews of Green, so I never read that one.

I could come up with more for this list, but like I said, my books are not here with me. Sad.
