It could be he was goofing off with some of his most-favored students. Could it be a PR thing? The internet is a vast place and more and more people read up on BJU before attending. Could this be their lame attempt at proof of BJU not being as scary as some people make it to be? |

It seems to me that this fellow is "playing hookie" useing vertigo / medical as an excuse to hide from all the bad publicity BJU has been getting recently from the pressure of not being an accredited college with a worthless degree. If he's being tossed sideways, his "vertigo" would have turned his face pale.

I'm sure all of us know someone with an invisible illness or invisible disability; think about what it's like to have your illness/disability questioned all the time by people who think you "don't look/act like" they expect someone with a serious illness/disability to look. I don't want to add to that. Especially because people with many common chronic illnesses or disabilities were assumed to have spiritual problems (not real biological problems) in the places most of us left. As far as Stephen goes, I've heard he's gotten worse with time, and the doctors may not be sure about his diagnosis. He may also be choosing to keep it private. Up to him who he tells what about his personal health. Maybe he does have vertigo and it wasn't bad yet whenever that happened. Maybe he threw up when he went down the hall. Maybe we can't know. I don't have a problem with a college president horsing around with students. (It's probably unprofessional, but what about that school is mature?) If the college administration chooses to give students demerits for doing so (with each other, not the president), I do have a problem with that. “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.” Bishop Desmond Tutu |

"If the college administration chooses to give students demerits for doing so (with each other, not the president),"
BJU certainly does give out D's for what the administration arbitrarily term, "major horseplay," for things the students do that do near come close to what this picture does. The “horizontal” picture is bad on at least two fronts: 1) That’s 25 demerits for MAJOR HORSEPLAY for everybody in the room (even if there were others in the room who were not actually doing this.) and 2) It actually is dangerous given the number of people in that tiny room (I know exactly the size from living in a BJU dorm room for 4 years.) The fact that he is the Prez trying to look cool is just dumb in my book. |

A couple years ago, some of the dorms instated a mentoring program where members of the faculty would be assigned a prayer group, and they would randomly come to prayer group and hang out with those guys specifically. This was the prayer group that Stephen Jones was given (I can say this for sure, because I know several of the guys in the pic.) He's probably there having a good time. As for "horse play" I know of a LOT of things that went on in the dorms that would probably be considered "horse play" but they were always laughed off, even by dorm sup's and RA's. It's really not that big of a deal. To me, there's absolutely nothing offensive about this pic, and if you know me, you know I'm not BJU's biggest fan. This pic is just not something I have an issue with.
Ignorance is not the issue. Willful ignorance is the issue. |

About Stephen's illness: as a student in his grandpappy's university I've seen Stephen, albeit he is presently on leave. He was sitting on a stool when preaching in chapel. I don't think even he would do that unless he had to to keep from falling over. I've been up close to him during a function and he walks with a cane. I know the Joneses are good actors, but I don't expect him to waste his time with a charade.
