Can You Just Imagine the Fear?
Re: The Warren Jeffs' FLDS Cult

Can you imagine the fear these women have? Many were made "spiritual wives" when they were just children. Breaking away from this cult has to be so difficult and traumatic.

Without this outside contact person to help her, I wonder if she would have had the courage to break free. I am glad she is now safe at a women's shelter. Based upon the reaction of the men of the compound, it appears many women are being held there against their will. Perhaps this lady's success will spark courage in others.

The woman fled to the home of Willie Jessop, a former top church associate expelled by Jeffs.

Jessop said the woman came there because she knew he would protect her.

The standoff began when men from the FLDS arrived at Jessop's office, wanting to take her back to the community, Jessop said. Detectives removed the woman and took her to the shelter

The sad thing is, this womans courage of escape will be kept far away out of sight from those in isolation. That is one of the tactics of a cult group as we all know and despise.

They will certainly deny her courage, but her absence will be obvious. I am sure they will claim she is a harlot chasing after the devil, etc. But deep down, some of the other women (especially the others who are questioning this cult) will know she is free.

Shouldn't the police listen to her story, go to the other women in the group, interview them privately, and offer them a chance to escape if that's what they want? This is suspected sexual abuse on a great scale, there should be some investigation.

I think a judge would have to issue a search warrant. This woman's testimony would have to be deemef sufficient for probable cause of false imprisonment. I do not understand the law enough to know if this is a real possibility.

Weren't these women questioned during the investigation into Jeffs' sexual assaults? Perhaps some have "smelled the coffee" since that time. Or perhaps the vacuum in leadership has opened up some opportunity for free thought. Who knows.

Some women might have adult children in the cult (and grandchildren) and might not want to leave without them. That would be such a hellish scenario.

RE: Can You Just Imagine the Fear?
It can be difficult to leave a close-knit group like that, when you're isolated from the outside world. I know of some people who left a Mennonite group in Canada (which, granted, is not as cult-like as these nutcases, but they are still very much kept isolated and are not allowed to leave) and heard their stories, and... it's not easy. When you go, it's got to be with the full knowledge that you will never see your family again. If you've got children and you can't take them with you, you'll never see them again. And the odds are that people in these groups simply have no experience with dealing with the outside world--probably can't drive, may not know how to get a job even if they're qualified for anything, wouldn't know how taxes work, anything like that, simply because they've never once dealt with those things.

RE: Can You Just Imagine the Fear?
This is a group I've studied quite a bit and, as crazy as it sounds, a lot of the women actually *do* want to live there. Quite a few of them have relatives on the outside. Their choice is not quite choice in the way we understand it, but in their minds at least, they freely decide to stay in the group. Of course, there are others that absolutely have no way out, whether they want to leave or not.
