RE: "Sketch" Erickson
I remember him speaking at a youth rally. He played some song with a female artist. He said that her moaning was the simulation of over 80 orgasms! I couldn't believe he said that. Baptists weren't supposed to know what those were.

RE: "Sketch" Erickson
Sorry to knock the dust off this one, but I ran across this thread while searching for Sketch Erickson and wondering what ever happened to him.
I saw Sketch in Phoenix in late '84/early '85 when I attended Grace Christian School. They packed us 8th-graders in vans (someone might have gotten pregnant, so boys in one van, girls in another) and took us to another fundy church school 3 or 4 days in a row. By the end of the week, I was freaked out to even turn my radio on for fear that demons would come out of the speakers and take over my brain. My best friend and I swore off secular music "forever". We destroyed our Prince and Hall and Oats records and his parents even destroyed their entire secular music collection - Billy Joel, Michael McDonald, Fleetwood Mac and the like. I ended up buying all three of Sketch's presentations on audio cassette at the end of the week. I ran across them a few years ago when I moved so I probably still have them around here somewhere, although being 30 years old, I'm sure they would never play anymore. |

RE: "Sketch" Erickson
I sat through a presentation or two that sounds a lot like this when I grew up. I don't remember who did them, but one (I believe) happened at The Wilds.
I learned all sorts of things like the anapestic beat's evil roots in (evil) African tribal dances, KISS meant "Knights In Satan's Service" and AC/DC meant "Anti-Christ/Devil's Children". I clearly recognize, as an independent, rational adult that most of it was made up nonsense designed to scare people into conformity with the norms of the sub-culture. At the time, it was soooo real. The Wilds is where I saw David Benoit give the anti-rock speech. You might have seen him. (I don't know if this Sketch guy ran in Wilds circles. I never heard of him before)

The last time I saw him, he said he couldn't find proof that KISS meant their name to stand for "Knights in Satan's Service" but they were kings in Satan's service as far has he was concerned. I'm pretty sure Sketch was also the one who claimed that AC/DC was code (IIRC, he said "Australian slang") for "bisexual". Remember sitting through the VHS series at some institution or another. It was basically an exercise in not laughing, and not singing along with the music which of course all of us Christian school kids knew (well except for all the old out of date Classic Rock stuff that we didn't know, didn't listen to the Classics till I was a more discerning adult and left the Hair metal for actual music) "Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side" |

OH LORD NOT BILLY JOEL! We all have our own inner angry natives and our minds invent a million ways to avoid confronting them directly. But if you just look them in the eye and ask them why they're chasing you with spears you just might learn something about yourself. |

RE: "Sketch" Erickson
That was it! My folks bought the Benoit tape when he came to G'ville later on.
I remember repeatedly thinking "dude, no one listens to those bands anymore" and going to a music store to figure out who "Deo" was. I remember the occult sermons too...
