Master_of_Irony, i hope you get them back. I feel as bad for you as I did my buddy who in 8th grade lost every AC/DC, Van Halen, and other good cd to his name because his mother felt it was evil and burned them.

Here's an ethical question.

You already owned the music. Therefore, you had the legal rights to it.
So then, would downloading it from others on the interwebz be wrong? (As in the "for free" version?)

It's a rhetorical question. But dig in your computer's trash first!

Best of luck!!!

I think that technically you don't own the music but rather the copy of the music on some medium (MP3, CD, record, etc.). So if you burn a CD to your computer and then give away or sell the CD you no longer have rights to the copy on your computer. Copyright laws are weird.

But wouldn't you own the "rights" to that music for your own personal use? I know, it is a grey area.
Philosophically, my feeling is "I already bought it. I am only replacing what I already paid for" would not be a huge ethical violation...and I pay for music (unless it's unavailable, and my friends have it)

I would think that the answer would be 'yes' about owning the rights but that is because its logical.

Like you said, its a grey area. As to downloading, I'd also agree but say that the industry wouldn't and you'd better have proof that you bought the music at some point if they ever catch you. They like to crucify 'pirates'. Confused
