The Death Penalty

The Death Penalty
I know the Bible is supportive of the death penalty, and that is why most protestant Christians support it.

But then again, the Bible, OT, encourages torture and other violence that we as a modern society would condemn as cruel and unusual.

Catholics are against the death penalty. I'm not sure why. Why are Catholics against it?

What would Jesus do?

An eye for an eye...?

I am not a Catholic, and I do not support execution in any way.

RE: The Death Penalty
I believe in capital punishment as a form of retributive justice. Let the punishment fit the crime.

RE: The Death Penalty
That being said I have a great deal of respect for those Christians who oppose the death penalty. So I don't really argue about it a lot.

And I also believe in a lengthy process of trial and appeals to be as certain as possible that guilty are the only ones who are punished.

Below is a link that starts explain the Catholic position. Not sure if it answers all your questions but it would be a start.

I'm going with N.T. Wright on this one: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/on-f..._blog.html

RE: The Death Penalty
I think it's a waste of money. The cold facts state that executing a prisoner is much, much more expensive than keeping him or her alive. I can think of better ways to spend millions of dollars than killing people.

RE: The Death Penalty
I'm a Catholic and my position is no abortion, no death penalty. However I was anti-death penalty before I became Catholic. Having a innocent member of your family executed will do that for you. It happened a long time ago but the repercussions carried over several generations.

you, the mirror of my life renewed,
let me find my life in you.~St. Augustine

RE: The Death Penalty
I used to be completely in favor of capital punishment. But I've increasingly come to see the wisdom in JRR Tolkien's words as spoken by Gandalf:

"Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement."

Especially after the events of this week.

It's time the long arm of the law put a few more in the ground. Send them off to their maker and he'll settle them down.
