My mother was married 4 times. This was the sentence:

This was the 60s and that wasn't common. (and we haven't even *started* on my dad) Lots of the "good church kids" (I really didn't know differences between them) were often not allowed to talk to me once their parents found out. Sad

Sometimes they apologized and explained why, others just cut me off and I would find out from someone else. I never understood why they would let me ride their bus but not be my friend. Now, I do. What, 40-50 years later!? (Age equals wisdom, or just hanging around long enough to learn the reasons for things.)

One of the Baptist churches I attended passed out these nice little newsletter-type things, very colorful, with cool little stories in them. One of the stories was about a kid from a family of hell-raisers (like me), and how the other kids wouldn't talk to her, even though she wanted them to... the story was obviously meant to call out the kids who were behaving that way. It startled me when I read it; I remember wondering why the rest of them hadn't read it.

At the end of the story, rather than a happy ending, she walks away from the church, and her hard-partying friends stop and open the car door for her.... and that was how it ended.

I thought of it for years... wonder if anyone else did?

Congrats on 3 years, Darrell, in AA, they would give you a nice bronze chip and, in the north, a cake. In the south, both, and it would be the excuse for a wonderful feast! Big Grin

Please imagine cyber versions of all of these!

"This past Sunday it was time for my sister to call home. She broke down willingly, and she agrees to go an institute (one of Bill Gothard's reformation houses) It is not like a boarding school. She can call and we can visit and do different things. The Gothard Institute is for good teenagers too. It is a privilege to go to this Institute so my father wrote a letter asking them to accept her. I truly hope they do." (They did and she bolted as soon as her friends came and picked her up. Not to worry though, she's now the most hateful, fearsome Fundy you've ever met! Praise the Lord, she came back into the fold)

And my last one (Gag!)
"Tuesday we went to a Gothard gathering. I learned many things about love, charity & smiling () I had a great time in the Lord."

Actually I hated every minute of it, but I basically kept this journal because my mom insisted. She read every page I wrote because I wasn't allowed to have any thoughts to myself. FUN

O MY GAWD! Your fam is one of the ones that sends their kids to HH? Congrats again on leaving.

Hmmm... three years ago I was still in the HAC-type church; the leadership simultaneously liked and disliked me... they liked that I gave them a lot of money and did a lot of free work for them... they didn't like that I didn't go "soul-winning".

I was unhappy about the way things were at the church, but I didn't think that I had any alternative: all other churches were "liberal" (according to the leadership)... so I had no out.

But God, in His grace, caused me to move... when I moved, I left that church and found a much better one. It was so strange to be around people that loved the brethren...

Yep, fear of imprisonment is a great way to keep your kids from embarrassing you in front of your fundy friends.
