Jack Reacher
I recently saw a book on the "New Books" shelf at our library called "61 Hours" by Lee Child. I read it, really enjoyed it, and realized it was one of several based on a character named Jack Reacher.
I am TOTALLY enjoying these books; I've seen them classified as crime fiction as well as thrillers. I'm sort of shy about mentioning how much I enjoy them on facebook though because I have lots of friends who'd be offended at the language, the violence, among other things. Unfortunately, I had two novels checked out over the long weekend when the library's closed and I finished them both, leaving me to have to read the other two books I checked out, NOT by Lee Childs and I guess I got spoiled (or just picked lousy books), because they are BORING me to death. I can't wait to get to the library and see if any more have come in. And I'm a very recent fan, but I am OUTRAGED that Tom Cruise has supposedly been selected to play Reacher in a movie. They have got to be stinking KIDDING me. It's more than a slap in the face to fans. It's like a poop in the face. Anyway, are there any Jack Reacher fans out there? "Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

RE: Jack Reacher
Yeah, but Reacher is specifically described as being HUGE - six foot five. His appearance and his physical skills play a big part in the novels.
I've enjoyed Tom Cruise's acting in other movies, but he is so totally NOT Jack Reacher. "Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

RE: Jack Reacher
Hi PW--I'm a huge Jack Reacher fan. Amazon got me hooked by offering one of Lee Child's books free for Kindle. I ended up buying all the rest! I also got both my parents hooked because we share a Kindle account. My dad and I were both upset that Tom Cruise will be Jack Reacher for the movie. He's what? 5'6"? No CGI in the world is going to make this right. And I respectfully disagree that he was a good Lestat. The only movie I like him in is "Minority Report."

RE: Jack Reacher
Hey, lorinda! I read all the Jack Reacher books in less than a month! Now I wish I'd spread them out more because I'm all done. I'm often surprised at who ends up being killed in the stories; Lee Childs has killed off some characters that surprised me before.
I liked both Minority Report and War of the Worlds, but making Tom Cruise Jack Reacher destroys the character, imo. "Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

RE: Jack Reacher
Now that you mention War of the Worlds, he wasn't too bad. But true dat, sister about Reacher. Did you read the newest book which is an origin-story type? I haven't yet, but my dad said it was good.

RE: Jack Reacher
I just checked out his website. I haven't yet read "The Affair" or the shorter one "Second Son."
The first one I read after choosing it at random in the library was "61 Hours" which moved slowly but I enjoyed as it kept getting closer and closer to . . . you didn't know what. Although Lee Childs did kill off some people I wanted to live in that story. Sometimes the descriptions of the towns he gives are almost claustrophobic: small little towns out in the middle of nowhere with nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. 61 Hours was like that; so was the one set in Nebraska and the one in Colorado with the alternate towns of Hope and Despair. "Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

RE: Jack Reacher
Nice catch on the town names; I missed that. My first read of his was the one where he ends up in the prison in the South. He wrote one about North Dakota in winter. I had to laugh. No one, not even Jack Reacher, could walk outside for three miles without a coat. You'd be a corpesicle.
