Lancaster Baptist Church Deacon Convicted
A Lancaster Baptist Church deacon was convicted of embezzlement and tax fraud. The estimated loss was just shy of $300,000.

The church caught him on video.

Shockingly, he worked as a fraud investigator for NASA at JPL for about 10 years.

Last year he was convicted of the theft and was sentenced to 4 years in state prison.

I am curious how a guy who has been out of work for so long and is currently in prison is gonna pay $89k in back taxes to the IRS before his sentencing date in November.

And again we are reminded that having a short haircut, a nice suit, strict music standards, soulwinning weekly, and being in your seat "every time the church doors open" does nothing to make a man righteous or holy (Colossians 2:20-23).

Wow. I guess they missed the part about "not being greedy of filthy lucre" or "thou shalt not steal."

I mentioned this to a couple of fundies from my old church which associates closely with LBC. I think a lot of them already knew about it (since this article dates back to July). I wasn't in church to hear how people reacted. But it was a bit eerie how I've heard more passion and outrage over missing a church service or listening to worldly music than stealing $300,000.

Exactly!

I have noticed the same thing. It is all *yawn* "we are all sinners"...But if this same guy had merely decided to go to a different Christian church for cause, he would be completely EVIL!

Interesting priorities indeed.

Makes you wonder who else has their hands in the coffer...

An apt reminder... I wonder how he could steal the money if there was a "committee" that counted the money - were the others blind? It's very, very strange.

Doing the rough math -- that's about $60,000 a year, which is over $1,000 each week in cash... I know that LBC is big, but that's 50 $20 bills he had to steal and be hiding. Very, very strange.

Yes, one friend's exact initial phrasing was: "It happens." Also, that he hoped it wouldn't affect the people at LBC and that it must be difficult for them. This same friend expressed far more distress when I admitted I am okay with drinking, not doing daily devotions, and leaving my church. Rolleyes

<Allegations>
What is also bizarre is that a staff member was allegedly accused of abuse a few years back and it was never reported to the police...

</Allegations>

But steal $$$,$$$ and into the stockade you go!

Like I said, interesting priorities these fundies have.

I thought about this for a bit and figured their insurance company would probably not compensate them for the loss unless they filed a police report. Just a theory. Chappell does not like bad publicity and I have seen no public statements from them about this.

RE: Lancaster Baptist Church Deacon Convicted
I think all of us know that what that deacon did was wrong and I hope all of us are glad he got caught. That said, with the pressure LBC puts on it's members to give maybe the deacon was just stealing money that was collected unethicaly.

If a young, female LBC member who went to movies and wore pants during the week and were to get assualted the spin would be that even though what happened to her was terrible God may have been trying to get her attention.

The deacon deserves to go to prison. The members of the church gave that money in good faith. But still, maybe God is trying to get LBC's attention.
