I followed a link in the above article to a story on ABC news and was shocked at this:

"Lawson, 19, plays a crucial and many-faceted role. He started a lawn-mowing business when he was 13 that makes enough money to provide a rolling no-interest line of credit to his parents and siblings. Gil and Kelly reject debt of all kinds: no mortgage, car loan or credit cards. Lawson is their only creditor.

"They're good for it," Lawson said. "I don't need the money right now anyway."

"We call him the bank financier, because he is always lending to siblings, or lending to us, or he's the one that always has money in the account when the rest of us don't," said Kelly.

Unbelievable!!! Angry They use one of their children as their bank? I wonder if they have ever paid him back any of the money? Angry

So, wait...

They claim that debt is wrong, and claim to be debt free, but really they are either borrowing or just taking money from their son. That's not being debt free, not at all. It's allowing your child to provide a living for you!

IMHO, at a minimum a family of that size should be going through at least 2 gal of milk a day.

That does sound like a little amount of milk. Heck, there is only three of us and we drink a gallon of milk in a couple of days. Sometimes in a day. I use big bowls for cereal.Big Grin

Our family is not much bigger than yours, and we go through about 5 gallons of milk per week. Milk is a common ingredient used in cooking/baking too, so that means each of the Bates' kids might not be getting their full 7.11 oz per day (adults tend to eat more than small kids do).

To visualize exactly what 7 oz of milk looks like, just get a one cup liquid measure and fill it up halfway between 3/4 and 1 cup lines. That is it...that is their allottment of milk (well, if there is any milk left after making 20 servings of pancake batter, cream soup, or pudding, which the adults will eat a fair portion of).

According to the above site, it is recommended that toddlers between the age of 1 and 2 years drink between 20-24 ounces of whole milk each day.

As for teens and tweens, according to this site:

Tweens and Teens need calcium now more than ever!
All they need is 3 cups of low-fat or fat-free milk every day, plus other calcium-rich foods.

One gallon of milk for a family of 20 is insufficient to meet the children's dietary requirements.

I truly hope that the person who made the quote was incorrect. My family of 5 can go through a gallon of milk in a day or 2, depending on what I cook and how much my oldest decides to drink. (He's in a major growth spurt stage.)

Have they never read Proverbs? Don't they know that the borrower is slave to the lender? How can patriarchy work if you are a slave to your own child?
