Game: Devil's Advocate!

Lightbulb Game: Devil's Advocate!
Here's a chance for us to role-play typical fundy arguments. One of us can take up a particular fundy rallying cry and the others will try to defeat it. Sound fun? I'll start.

"God expects the best from us; this means that dressing in formal attire for Sunday church is of utmost importance for the believer. Not doing so is not showing God the proper respect."

Why Sunday and not the entire week?

[I shouldn't forget to include some mighty proof-texts!]

Why, Tony! Because Sunday is the Lord's Day, and we enter His House to worship Him. We should not come before Him in the everyday clothes of work and recreation, but in our very best. This is what God expects. We are to be holy as He is holy, amen?

I thought God looks upon the inside, the heart and not on the outward appearance?

But surely you agree that both Testaments are full of verses that instruct us in all manner of outward things? God is concerned with both. And we must watch our appearance before men, as you mentioned.

But doesn't James 2:2-4 adress this issue? It seems to assume that some people aren't going to be "dressed up," and God doesn't seem too concerned about that.

If I followed all of the verses in both Testaments then would I not have to burn all of my shirts, since they are of mixed fabrics (Leviticus 19:19)? And by doing so I would not have any shirts in which to wear with my suit and tie?

We enter His house? Aren't WE his house and temple? When the Bible talks about the church, it talks about people, not a building. What exactly do you mean by "His house?"

You are making a distinction between life (work and recreation) and worship. Shouldn't these two be one and the same? Do I only worship Him a certain day of the week? Is He only the "Lord of the hills and not of the valleys"?

Holy. How does extra cloth on me make me holy?

Well you should wear a suit to church because you would wear one if you were visiting the President. Don't you love God more than the President (especially this heathen, foreign one we have now, amen?)
