People at clubs and bars generally don't make sense. Last time I went to a club, I hadn't even walked inside before some guy standing outside the club said to me, "Do you want coffee or tea, or me?"

That appears to be the title of a book from the 60's (I suspected and looked at Wikipedia). As to why he'd try it as a pickup line, I don't know... it's Berkeley?

As for my situation, these girls were most likely wanting money for drugs, or drugs... coke, to be exact.
