One was an accounting major, and had a ridiculous time getting his credits accepted so he could get his masters. The other one left after 3 years and joined the Marines, saying he could handle their rules better. LOL My brother did say they were very excited when the Planetarium was built. He said there was suddenly an increased interest in astronomy, because it was dark. He got his first blow job in there. If someone from PCC leadership reads this they will be posting guards with flashlights in the planetarium, LOL! You need a countdown calendar to encourage you during these final 6 weeks. http://www.timeanddate.com/counters/ |

As I have gradually started to expand my world view beyond the narrow limits of the IFB, I have realized that the ABeka program is educationally lacking. IMO they do not provide a good college-prep education for someone who is looking to go to a secular school. My school uses a combined curriculum, and this is one of the reasons why. My principal readily admits that Abeka's huge weakness is a complete lack of critical thinking skills. I use a secular reading curriculum with selected ABeka stories for supplemental/independent reading because ABeka teaches 0 reading skills or critical thinking skills. Having gone to PCC, I'd say that the majority of courses there reflect a lack of critical thinking skills. There are some the do an excellent job of teaching thinking skills, but that's entirely do to their having a small handful of stellar professors there when I was there. In my departments (English and Speech) the majority of those professors have since retired or left, and the changes that were being made to the Speech department while I was still in grad school indicated that less critical thinking and student growth would be seen in the future. Thus, I doubt those professors were replaced with ones of equal teaching-in-depth calibre. PCC is very much about academics, but only in a certain narrow set--they never really get beyond the grammar stage (learn facts, be able to regurgitate or specifically apply in limited fashion) of instruction. Some course paths get to the logical stage (seeing basic relationships between knowledge realms, slight reasoning and application outside of the box), but almost none get to the rhetorical stage (making broad inferences, drawing conclusions, making application across fields and subject matter, analyzing and communicating outside the box in many areas) that university courses beyond 100 level are meant to get. That said, my impression is that it's miles far and away better than anything offered academically at HAC. PCC would be at about the average community college level of academic rigor for many of its basic courses, I'd posit. Again, that's a very general statement. Some professors did an excellent job in their field and despite the conditions in which they had to work. But the general tenor of the school is that knowing a bunch of facts is good, analyzing and drawing conclusions on your own is bad. Forget the fear/it's just a crutch/that tries to hold you back/and turn your dreams to dust. |
