RE: Judgment
The fascination with Judgement.

I vote for being like the lillies of the field.

My job is to live a good life "just because." Not for future rewards, but because it is the best way to live. Period.

For every difficult and complicated question there is an answer that is simple, easily understood and wrong." H.L. Mencken

Even as a kid I asked If God remembers my sin no more ((Isaiah 43:25) then why is He keeping records?

RE: Judgment
Definitely not alone. Growing up fundy I picked up some weird beliefs about heaven, kids can be very, very literal. I was terrified of dying because heaven sounded like such a scary place, people seeing all your sins, God glowering down from the Great White Throne in disappointment over what a lousy Christian life I had lived, being permanently stuck as a second class citizen for eternity (I was convinced all my works would turn out to be "wood, hay, and stubble" and that I would barely squeak into heaven only because I had accepted Jesus, no rewards or "well done thou good and faithful servant" for me).
On a lighter note, heaven also seemed rather boring, no oceans or seas and by logical extension no marine life which was a bummer because I love both, singing repetitive chants like "Holy Holy Holy" all the time and casting crowns in front of Jesus on His throne really didn't seem very appealing to a young kid, and living in a big mansion always sounded like a lot of work, I hated house work and a big mansion would mean more rooms to clean. Then there where the various feasts, I always wondered who was going to be fixing all the food for the feasts and cleaning up afterwards (probably me, women always where responsible for such tasks in my little corner of the world).

RE: Judgment
Does anyone have good resources about the Judgment Seat of Christ?

In my upbringing, it has been that when you stand before God, EVERYONE IN HEAVEN will be seeing ALL of your works, every single thing. That time I skipped a door during my soulwinning will be shown and I will have to answer for it. That time I didn't evangelize to that person, God will confront me about it in front of all of Heaven's citizens.

And then there is the thing of the 5 crowns. Can you only win a max of one of each crown? Can you earn each crowns multiple times? I'm getting so confused just thinking about all this. Eschatology, why do you have to be so difficult?

RE: Judgment
You should all have a read of Andrew Farley's "The Naked Gospel". He spends a few chapters covering this very topic, about the american mindset of the big projector screen in heaven where our whole life will be replayed. His conclusion, which I believe is biblical, is that it does not occur because as everyone has said here, our works and lawless acts, God has rememeberd no more, and goes further to claim that there are no "rewards" for good believers, but one reward (the Bible never mentions rewards plural. That's a humanistic interpretation of a few passages) for all believers.

I think the chapter is called "Burning Matryoshkas" but I don't recall.

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; - Titus 2:11-12

RE: Judgment
I recently asked someone on leaving's blog (Randy Ross) about a threat he made towards he husband. It was a veiled attempt at implying her husband was hell bound because they are leaving the IFB church. He said something like "I wouldn't want to be your husband on judgment day because he is going to have to 'give an account' to God". My reply was merely a bunch of "And what?" over and over again. Randy Ross didn't reply.

Really.. what could happen? What would the point be? If our sins are all forgiven and forgotten, it would just be one person after another giving excuses, or standing without excuses while God says "What on earth are you talking about? I don't remember that. Stop crying, whatever you did, I forgot about it, or did you not read Hebrews?. Oh, you read Hebrews 6. Yeah, I wish I'd made that a bit clearer, but now you are here, looks like it wasn't for you right?".

And if it was a judgment where they were condemned, what would the point of replaying their life be. Are they in Adam? Yes. Goodbye.

RE: Judgment
Which is why the Bible speaks of a "new heaven and a new earth." God will restore paradise lost and we will live on a new earth that will be the way it was originally intended. (haven't got the quote thing down quite yet)

Donb 123, haven't really revisited eschatology yet, but have run across this type of statement in reading about other doctrines. If you don't mind could you elaborate a little further? Are you saying heaven is this current earth/universe restored to pre-Fall condition (similar to what C S Lewis presented in "The Last Battle" where the new Narnia is "more real, more Narnian" than the Narnia experienced throughout the series)? And is it also part of what Anglicans are talking about when referring to "the breaking in of the Kingdom"?

RE: Judgment
This is a good discussion. I'd like this thread to be just as active as that 'Spanking: Good or Bad?' thread.

RE: Judgment
I was always terrified of the idea of heaven. I would cry because "I wouldn't know my mom, I wouldn't know my dad and I wouldn't be me." I would just be this dream-like version of myself, or so I thought.

I must admit that it still scares me and I try not to think about it. Because all I can think about is that I will be bored (gosh, that sounds horrible to admit) or won't remember any of my family and friends and of course, there is the terrifying thought that God will just shake His head at me. I might be in heaven because of grace/faith but I'm certainly not one of the "important" people. I'm afraid I will feel like the red-headed step child because I haven't been as good as I could be. My salvation is guarranteed by God's grace but I don't want my santification process to be reviewed.

I do not want people to be very agreeable, as it saves me the trouble of liking them a great deal.
~ Jane Austen
