Out of the Dark, by David Weber
I'm not done with this book--I got it from the liberry yesterday--but I am enjoying it.

Military, near-future science fiction of an alien invasion and what humanity DOES about it.

it's a lot of fun--sort of like reading Independence Day.

Cool! I'm reading "The Five People You Meet in Heaven" but when I'm done, I might try that for a totally different genre.

"Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan.

Right, so. . . I finished it, and I enjoyed it.

the deus ex machina that saves the Earth was a bit distracting, but if one can roll with it, one will be okay.

David Weber of Honor Harrington fame? I was skeptical at first, but I loved the Honor series.

that's him. I read Honor way back when, and then learned it's a re-telling of the Hornblower books. No wonder Honor felt so comfortable for me.

My husband's reading this book as well, but he's not liking it. There's a slow start. I just skip boring parts to get them over with, so I tend to like most books I read, because I skip over the boring bits. He was looking at me reproachfully as he worked his way through them. "Oh, yeah. I skimmed that part."

If any of you are concerned by my husband's review. . .he has kept reading it, and has come around. Once the aliens get involved, it improves dramatically.

My husband is rooting for the aliens.
