I went to it, but the page was only on the screen for a few seconds, then it automatically directed to another scribd page, only it wouldn't actually load... it just kept refreshing and wouldn't go anywhere.

RE: Rules, Rules and more Rules
Hmmm, you know I have to say that the Handbook is actually a little better than when I was there. (Though it's still full of problems, for sure). For example, they acknowledge that they have no right to replace parental authority (where the handbook when I was there actually stated that students shouldn't be going home any more than necessary becasue they needed to stay in the university's awesome environment every second). They also clearly state that students come under their authority by voluntary choice. When I was there it was more like students were to obey BJU from some "divine right of kings" idea or something like that. I also see they've adopted a carrot and stick method for something things instead of solely using the stick. Finally, I notice that they seem to have tried to even some things up a little, so that there isn't such a blatant, sexist difference between rules for women and rules for men.

But there are some interesting new things that make me laugh. For example:

"They are to bring a printed Bible and sit in their assigned chapel seats. " Are they having a problem with students bringing hand copied Bibles? Or scrolls copied by scribes?

"Groups need to include an odd ratio of genders and at least one student with advanced privileges for every five students in the group. The student with advanced privileges assumes responsibility for the safety and activity of the group. Group members stay together throughout the activity. Groups over 10 are to have a faculty, staff or graduate assistant chaperon. " Does the IRS come to these people for advice on how to make tax regulations more obscure and difficult to understand?

"Paid staff from a student’s church may chaperon a mixed group composed of members of his church" So volunteers are less trustworthy than the ones getting money for their service?

"Televisions in residence hall rooms may be used as game consoles only. Students are not to watch television via the Internet on their cell phones or computers. " Under no circumstances may you watch that 1/2 hour of the Andy Griffith Show. But if you want to play Sims all day on your gaming console, no problem!

"Conservative walking shoes, loafers, boots, and leather deck-type shoes " Show me a liberal loafer and my life is complete.

"For residence hall students, an effective Christian testimony, mature social and residence hall adjustments, along with strong interpersonal relationships with others, are key indicators of how well individuals are growing spiritually and how well they are progressing in developing Christlike character" It's also an awesome way to gauge how well they've learned to work the system.

"In the interest of this unity, proselytizing for nonessential theological interpretations, such as Calvinism and Arminianism, is not allowed. " In the case of the latter, because we don't need to when everyone on campus is one.

"Societies are the only student groups that may have permanent ensembles larger than nine members. Temporary groups, such as for class meetings, may be organized for up to three weeks’ duration. " Hey! The Chinese Communists have this same rule for groups! Come to think of it, the Communists have almost exactly the same rules for everything.

"Extension groups may eat together in private homes associated with their ministries. The name of the hostess should be listed on the extension pass. " Because if there's not a woman doing the cooking, it's not a legal meal. Or if it's a meal invitation, the husband/father is irrelevant?

I think that rule is for students who have electronic copies on Kindle or are reading along on their iPods. I know when I'm with my husband on vacation, he NEVER has a Bible, but he does always pull out his phone which has an electronic Bible on it. I always feel vaguely guilty because he just doesn't look like he's reading the Bible. He looks like he's playing a computer game in church which violates the whole "apearance of evil" thing.

"Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan.

Student may not wear blue denim, although they may wear any other color of denim. (this led to some very interesting color choices by yours truly).

The rule was amended my senior year: Students may not wear blue denim except for Fridays.

We students constantly badgered our teachers and school administrators about the senselessness of this rule. They never could provide a principled reason for why blue denim was only appropriate for Fridays. Most common reply: "It is important that you learn to follows rules that don't make any sense to you." I kid you not.

My favorite was when we were followed down the hall with a six inch ruler and made to slide over if we weren't far enough apart... good times!
They did away with denim entirely when Main took over. That's when things got bad. Luckily my parents moved me to another school so I only had to endure one year of it, but the stories I've heard are unbelievable!
The first year I was gone my class went from 8 down to 2.

Has to do with that old favorite, the appearance of evil. Sure, you're just playing gin rummy but a weaker brother could think you were playing poker and gamblingAngry!

One of the classic unwritten rules at my fundy church.
Women must wear knee-length (at least) skirts and pumps and men must wear button down shirts (cuff link style preferred) and ties to all services. Dressing down is seen as being disrepectful the the Lord our God. I was in my 20s before I had the nerve to wear slacks to an evening church service (I still feel uncomfortable being in church sunday morning if I'm not in a dress).

Some people get cool hallucinations that tell them to kill people. Mine just try to get me into trouble.

Where I grew up, everybody played cards. In our public school, playing cards was a fun part of our spending time and socializing with other students. Only scruffy men in casinos gambled their lives away playing poker, not high school students.

When I became a Fundy, I learned that the world perceived playing cards as appearance of evil...

RE: Rules, Rules and more Rules
One of my first steps away from Fundyism took place when reading over my IFB high school's rulebook. Under the music section it said

Students of XXX Christian School will not listen to or quote rock or pop music because it interferes with the spiritual life of the believer.

Now, I asked myself, does it really do that?

"Respect staff/faculty" = you'll do what we say every time, no exceptions. I HATED how the respect rule was never a two way street. In other words, it was to be given freely, not earned, and you sure wouldn't receive respect in return. There was no room for discussing, compromising, or finding out a person's motives before jumping to conclusions.

I still remember dreading going to the bathroom before "church" at the crown center, since a Mrs. Potter would be parked in front of the entry checking all our outfits. Of course the dorms would be closed by then so you couldn't go back to change if she pounced on you. Then you had to spend an entire church service feeling uncomfortable. The one time in my two years there she deemed my outfit inappropriate was the same day my major was canceled on me. It was not a good day and it was enough to make me cry in front of everyone which was so embarrassing.

Girls definitely had it worse than guys.

I thought it was dumb that you couldn't take your computer off campus, you were supposed to tell on other people, and they locked all but one door into the dorms to protect us from a possible crazed-shooter (as if when he came in the front door, the student at the front desk would scare him away).

we are all a little looney
