But in reality, "evangelical" is a term stolen by some American Protestant splintergroups in the early 20th/late 19th century (mostly) from us Lutherans, who had been using the term since the 1500's. I don't know. As an IFBer, we were isolated from everyone else and assumed they were all pretty much apostate or backslidden.
