RANT!
OK, this could have gone in the Dear So and So thread, but I have two reasons for posting here. 1) Shoes and boymom were having quite the discussion on the other thread and I didn't want to interrupt. And 2) I am so ticked that I wanted more exposure!
<RANT> Dear Mr. Indian (Asian not American) Recruiter, Yes, I recognize the number of dollars per hour I requested is higher than you can pay. However do you realize that the fact that your contract company does not offer ANY benefits means I have to cover the cost of those? Do you further realize that I have twice the experience in the programming language you are looking for? And finally, did you NOT realize that the email I send you with my expectations came AFTER I told you the cost of living in Seattle was so high that I didn't think my requirements would be able to be met? First off, just because your company doesn't offer ANY benefits, don't try to convince me that benefits are the difference between contract and full-time positions. THAT IS NOT TRUE?!?!?! I have several other contract companies who offer insurance, vacations, holidays, and retirement. In fact, other than your company, EVERY SINGLE OTHER COMPANY (except one) has offered at the least insurance. YOU ARE THE EXCEPTION SO STOP TRYING TO MAKE LIKE I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CONTRACT AND FULL TIME!!!! Second, did you even bother to look at my resume before calling me? Did you see that not only do I exceed the primary requirements of the position, but I also meet multiple secondary requirements? Was that a bit too much work? Third, when you first called I gave you a number that is based on the USA average cost of living. I told you that cost of living comparison might change the number I required. I use this number because of that and because I can't look at cost of living comparisons every time my phone rings. It takes into account my need for housing as well as the fact that I am below the national average. I replied to your email with an apology because after checking the cost of living comparison I found that Seattle was 150% of national average and that housing (the only additional expense we will have) is over 200% of the national average. I then explained in that email that I thought my required wage would likely put me out of the market. You were the one who continued to pursue this. Oh, and when I send you an email, respond to the email! There is no need for you to call me to reply to the email. I am perfectly able to read an email and answer any questions you might have. Just because it is your job to call potential job seekers all day doesn't mean I have all day to sit on the phone and talk to you. Learn to communicate through email or find another job! One more thing. When you asked if I could accept the lowest of the numbers in my range and replied to you that it would have to be higher if I were going to have to do benefits on my own, THE ANSWER ISN'T GOING TO CHANGE BECAUSE YOU ASK ME THE SAME QUESTION WITH THE SAME AMOUNT FOUR MORE TIMES?!?! Really? Reall?!?!? </RANT> <DISCLAIMER> This is not intended to be disparaging toward those in the recruitment or IT fields who are of Asian Indian origin. I have worked with you before and would love to again. When I was still a fundy, I knew your country was on the short list if I ever got that "missionary" calling. I never did, but I would still love to visit. You are really great people and most every one of you that I have worked with has been a really cool person. (As with WASPs, there are always exceptions.) </DISCLAIMER> "(1) Paul, Wikipedia expert, 06.10.2011" - Shoes Paul 4 Prez |

RE: RANT!
Dear Paul,
Sorry about hijacking the other thread, I blame Shoes. And you're right that this deserved its own post. I hope (I won't say pray cause that is a very weak area for me) you find the job you are looking for and it meets your needs. Good luck. sincerely, boymom She Who Must Be Obeyed |
