Learning from Fundamentalists?
Food for thought. http://bit.ly/hcuQfp
I don't claim to agree with everything (I'm ducking pre-emptively), but I thought it was interesting. Colossians 2:16-23 |

RE: Learning from Fundamentalists?
Quite interesting.
I noticed most of the responders (some were fundamentalists- Doran and Minnick) praised the ideals of fundamentalism, especially fundamentalism at the beginning of the previous century. Hardly anyone had anything good to say about the last 70 years or so of the movement, except as a warning. In some ways, they are saying many of the same things we are saying here: most of us appreciate the fact that we found God in fundamentalism, but we don't want to get carried away with the nonsense anymore. I walk with bare, hushed feet the ground Ye tread with boldness shod;
I dare not fix with mete and bound The love and power of God. - J.G. Whittier |

RE: Learning from Fundamentalists?
The first few (which is as far as I got) seem to take for granted that Fundamentalism stands for a commitment to the Bible, but actually, it does not. I know that it claims to, but Christian Fundamentalism is filled with heresies and with sins and scandals of the most abominable nature. Looks to me like the poll was just a means for conservative religious guys to pat Fundamentalism on the back and make sure they don't alienate it too much. None of them are going to say the truth about the state of Fundamentalism, nor of God's open disdain for it.

RE: Learning from Fundamentalists?
The Fundamentals = true "Fundamentalism" that properly defines historic, evangelical Christianity.
The Fundamentals + 19th/early 20th century Revivalist culture + Religious Right politics + Manichean (an ancient gnostic group) approach to the world (us vs them) = the false fundamentalism spread around IFBism and some other denoms. An outstanding project in progress, by the Grace of God. |

RE: Learning from Fundamentalists?
Thanks for the interesting link, Soli. I think we have all learned from fundamentalists. There is just plenty of stuff that we later found out we needed to unlearn from them.

None of them are going to say the truth about the state of Fundamentalism, nor of God's open disdain for it. Some of the later guys, like David Wells and Carl Trueman, mentioned that a lot of bizarre theology came from Fundamentalism. Fairly early in the list, Timothy George pointed out that the Trinity isn't among the Fundamentals. Many of these guys have no idea about the inner workings and scandals of Fundamentalism and will not speak to it's state nor presume to speak for God. |
