Before I encountered fundies, I had NO IDEA that any churches anywhere felt they had the authority to dictate the daily lives of their members, in or out of the church. This may be a dumb question but... if they caught you swimming, what's the worst that could happen?? Will a deacon jump out of the bushes and shout, "AHA! We KNEW you were a brazen hussy!!"?? |

RE: Swimming Modestly
From Mrs. X's meet & greet initial post, her husband is the pastor. Would mean loss of employment and the chaos that would ensue of trying to find a new church w/ "brazen hussy" & I'm sure other namecalling rumor spreading.

Ooooh, ok. I see. I didn't realize her husband was the pastor, but now I understand why she feels trapped. I guess I also didn't get it at first because, since I "married into" a fundy family rather than being born into one, I still have trouble wrapping my head around the level of control the IFB church exercises over its members.
Mrs. X, you are welcome to come swim in my pool anytime! There are no fundy spies, and you can wear whatever you want! |

RE: Swimming Modestly
I was wondering the same thing myself and I went to the meet & greet, cause I knew there was some reason it was more of a trap than usual. I wish I had some better advice. They are definitely wrong, and I hope you eventually get out.

RE: Swimming Modestly
I have to go pack my bathing suit because I'm going on a over-night field trip with one of my kids. School instructions did NOT include shirts over suits - yay!
"Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

RE: Swimming Modestly
It's not so much the act of swimming but the act of mixed bathing. What can they do? It depends on what I wear when I am swimming I suppose. If I put on anything other than the skirts and dresses I wear then it would be leading to the downhill slippery slope. Things would ensue behind the scenes and my husband would be encouraged to divorce this brazen hussy. It seems like a long stretch but it isn't. It's all done in the name of the Lord, don't you know?
