RE: Lutheran doctrine?
I am Lutheran!
Sola Scriptura (scripture alone) Sola Fide (faith alone) Sola Gratia (grace alone) It sounds very baptist actually. You have to read into it though. We are sacramental. We believe that God works in Holy baptism and communion. (because scripture says so) We also baptize infants. I recommend the wittenberg trail. It is very good for exploring Lutheranism. There are many clergy available for asking questions. wittenbergtrail.ning.com |

RE: Lutheran doctrine?
Much heavier on God's grace than on the "you need to be saved" theology, for sure! I grew up Lutheran...and really still am, even though I attend a very conservative non-denominational church now.
Pretty easy going. The worship is pretty predictable. Follows a set pattern. Lutherans I think believe that God SPEAKS through the Bible, but we need common sense to make sense of it and apply it. RE: Lutheran doctrine?
If you are going to research them remember there are different synods, Missouri, WI, Evangelical, etc... some of the more conservative are not happy about the Evangelicals allowing gay ministers.
I would say Bean hit it correctly, at least in my Lutheran church growing up. Of course we were already saved by grace was the thinking. Though I do have a Lutheran relative that sometimes asks (repeatedly) another relative if they are 'saved'. I think they are an exception though and not the general rule of Lutheran thinking, that has been my experience. This relative enjoys the 'Left Behind' series which I don't think most Lutheran's put much stock in and find them, well, I won't say..... We did not have strict rules in our church and were free to think for ourselves and even disagree and discuss with the minister in confirmation class. There were no repercussions or negative actions for thinking and asking questions even when we did not end up agreeing with him. Nobody thought you were less of a Christian or were being haughty or whatever word cults use for disagreeing with 'authority'. A friend went to a different synod and they did not allow dancing or joining boy or girl scouts. It was completely different type of church than the one I went to. |

RE: Lutheran doctrine?
Hi Arla, Yes LCMS is quite conservative. "Free Lutheran" is also very conservative, bordering on the theology of born again salvation. I grew up in what was the ALC, which is now the ELCA...sounds exactly like what you describe.
