I think he knew likely knew what was coming next as far as arrests, media, and jail time and he took the cowards way out.

If he was guilty, he probably knew his time would be up the minute he walked into prison. Even hardened cons hate child abusers; unless he did his time completely isolated from the rest of the prison population he'd be at risk. And even solitary's no garauntee of safety, just ask Jeffery Dahmer.
