C.S. Lewis - The Abolition of Man, Till We Have Faces & An Experiment in Criticism
The last book is about loving literature for what it is instead of using it to teach morals, history, etc. It made me realize that Fundies don't love anything unless they can "use" it to manipulate/control you. I knew my love of fiction wouldn't ever be appreciated. Orwell: Animal Farm & 1984 Bradbury: Fahrenheit 451 Matheson: I Am Legend Le Guin: The Tombs of Atuan The last two here are about paradigm shifts. The "hero" of Legend discovers that he's become a monster who's killed hundreds of people. The "heroine" of Atuan is a high priestess who is manipulated into killing people. When she tries to escape the cult, they try to kill her. They forced me to think about my own perceptions and it was creepy how the controlling characters in the books were like people I knew in church. I know it's not a book but another big influence was The Magdalene Sisters movie. It forced me to admit that if I was ever assaulted, the people in church would blame me and dump me like a hot potato. Not too much Bible or theology in my list... both were used to beat the emotional crap out of me, so I tended to avoid reading them. I only started reading my Bible again recently and can only stomach it because it's a completely different translation. |
