RE: Culottes
Oh, yes! I love long hair - unless it's greasy, stringy, and unkempt.

"Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan.

Yes, you've got to take care of it that's for sure.

The sad way a lot of fundy teen girls look with baggy culottes hanging nearly to their ankles, worn-out sneakers, and an ugly t-shirt with long, stringy hair pulled back in a pony-tail is just not attractive. I feel bad that no one is telling them that it is not ungodly to dress attractively.

THIS!!! This is my pet-peeve of all modesty pet-peeves. If your personal standards of modesty dictate skirts/culottes only, that's between you and the Holy Spirit, but to look like you just rolled out of a tent of dirty old fabric is a travesty. Even the Duggar girls in their everyday jeans skirts and tees fix their hair, wear makeup suitable for their age, and wear more modern styles of skirts/shirts/shoes that actually fit them!

Personally, my family, while conservative let me wear pants everywhere but church, but ours was a church that would publicly decry pants on women. (maybe my family was a but hypocritical?) Cullotes were required for teen activities at church, but the most rebellious of us (who wore pants everwhere else) wrefused to wear them, and instead would wear super-long, fitted, faded, whiskered, studded jean skirts. It didn't matter if we were bowling - we wore em anyway. Culottes were unthinkable.

I ripped a straight cut jean skirt straight up the back, all the way to the waistband, playing basketball at church once.

RE: Culottes
Culottes: the only acceptable use for such a monstrosity is bonfire fuel. Hate the (insert name of deity figure of choice)-forsaken things.

The things are pointless on me. Even shorts go at or below my knee, so what's the point? For my fellow shorties, just wear the shorts already. Better looking, more styles, and more modest since the legs aren't wide enough to double as a camping tent and therefore expose all you've got with one strong wind.

There's some chick out on one of the uber-Fundy sites who tells women that part of dressing modestly is wearing colors that are not well-suited to their skin color (on top of evil culottes, potato-sack jumpers, and other Fundy fashion abominations). Uh... NO! Modest does not have to mean ugly. If anything, the Jews teach that once the tznius (a/k/a modesty) requirement is met, it is a mitzvah to make that modesty beautiful. Wearing a blouse that makes one look like a corpse along with the polyester leg-tents from hell called "culottes" isn't going to cut it.

RE: Culottes
I live not far from a major fundy U that is discussed often on here. When I go to certain places in town, I see students from that school. They stick out like a sore thumb, with their long un-stylish jean skirts and white keds. But to my knowledge, I have never seen anyone actually wearing culottes. Would this be because it would not be appropriate to wear culottes to certain places (i.e. the mall, which is not a physical activity like horseback riding) OR are culottes just more common among some fundy groups than others? Help a non-fundy understand this fashion suicide!

Check out Goodwill. You would not believe the cool stuff I've found there, most of their clothes are under $10 and really nice. I've even found brand new stuff, with the sale tags still on. Not to mention (being a major needlework freak) some fantastic buys on yarn.

Definitely check it out, but it also depends on where you live. The Goodwill here in my town is usually pretty lacking in classy, long-wearing pieces or trendy pieces (yes, I'm a little bit of a trendster... but I even it out by being too curvy to wear most of what's in style anyway Wink ). I spent a whole day going through GW, SA, and other thrift stores (and we have a good sized city, Springfield, MO) and found nothing that stood out to me.

But maybe I'm just picky... Tongue

I think w/very few exceptions, we only wore them when we HAD to (sporting events, for example). But the college I attended did let the girls wear sweats in the gym for sports stuff. But we were required to wear skirts to town.

Among certain groups, culottes are really only acceptable for "strenuous" activity or play time but are considered too casual for even such a casual activity as shopping! The entire time I was at BJU, I never wore culottes. The only time I saw other girls wearing them was for gym class (although since we could wear sweatpants for class most of just did that) or to a dating outing.

Of course, it's entirely possible that the rules would allow the girls to wear culottes but they're just not willing to go out in public wearing them!

RE: Culottes
With my hips and my badonkadonk, I'd choose the skirt over culottes if given the choice. Even a long skirt, if cut right, on a shorty and curvy like me can be flattering; culottes, on the other hand, have a vicious way of making the curves on me look even curvier (and goodness knows, I don't need that!).
