RE: good sources for correcting my indoctrination
I suggest looking into United Methodist materials. You can start at http://www.umc.org .

Its all kool aid at some point.
You probably should just start with reading the Bible. That corrected many a flaw in my thinking. (BTW, thats what its for...) Just the stuff that is obvious and easy to understand will be pretty mind bending if you have been immersed in fundamentalism as it exists today for any length of time "Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side" |

I suggest a book. Extreme Righteousness by Tom Hovestol. Best book I read that helped me see my errors.

That cover is different from my copy. Must be a second or third printing. Good thing, because that book deserves many printings. We had a discussion about this very topic a few months ago on the main blog. I walk with bare, hushed feet the ground Ye tread with boldness shod;
I dare not fix with mete and bound The love and power of God. - J.G. Whittier |

Books: "Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism" by John Shelby Spong. "Stealing Jesus: How Fundamentalism Betrays Christianity" by Bruce Bawer. "Reading the Bible Again for the First Time" by Marcus J. Borg.

RE: good sources for correcting my indoctrination
There are lots of people on this site. Some are still so conservative that others would still call us fundamentalists (although we're not because we reject the things most fundies hold most dear and the fundies themselves have separated from us). Others are in various forms of evangelical Christianity or mainline denominations. Others are no longer believers, some agnostic and some atheist. (Perhaps some have turned to other religions too though I don't recall.)
You'll get advice from lots of different directions. It was reading God's Word most that influenced my husband to step away from the IFB. "Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

RE: good sources for correcting my indoctrination
Any of N.T. Wright's books. Some of them are more scholarly, while others are written for a general audience. Simply Jesus, How God Became King, and Surprised By Hope are good. The Divine Conspiracy by Dallas Willard, Soul Survivor, What's So Amazing About Grace, and The Jesus I Never Knew by Phillip Yancey, and Mere Churchianity by Michael Spencer are also good reads. Scandalous Freedom and Three Free Sins by Steve Brown will help a lot.
Not all who wander are lost. |
