He'd rant and rail about Catholics obeying a Pope, but his followers are supposed to just accept whatever he said without Biblical support? Let's see: genocide, child abuse, rape, murder, mutilation, violence, torture, hypocrisy, misuse of power to exploit the helpless, greed -- Well, maybe those are sins, but the REAL SIN is women wearing shorts. *please excuse me while I go throw up in the toilet in absolute disgust* "Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

"Let's see: genocide, child abuse, rape, murder, mutilation, violence, torture, hypocrisy, misuse of power to exploit the helpless, greed." Pretty much all condoned throughout the OT. As to the original topic, I have certainly seen some offensive thighs before... mostly at peopleofwalmart.com.

RE: IFB - Showing Your Thighs Is Sin
It amazes me how so many IFB churches focus on things like this - showing thighs, reading a different translation of the Bible, listening to wrong music, etc. - when there are so many other things we could do that would be a better way to show the world God's love. Like, maybe instead of building a new auditorium, we could send money to build some wells in Africa so people have clean drinking water or we could donate to a local food pantry so people who are jobless in this economy can still feed their kids ...
This is exactly why I left the IFB behind and am now happily participating in a church where we are active in our community - not to convert people, but to show them God's love by meeting some of their obvious physical needs.

RE: IFB - Showing Your Thighs Is Sin
Quote:Many IFB churches would agree with this teaching can someone rightly interpret Isaiah 47:2-3 and Ezekiel 28:42 in it's proper context? Using Isaiah 47:2-3 to justify a prohibition on showing too much leg is a profound misuse of the text. First, note that nothing in the text suggests that it is a command to be obeyed. But more importantly, reading the text in this way suggests that, as CS Lewis said of practitioners of some forms of biblical criticism, the interpreter may have read the Bible but hasn't read much else. A more plausible explanation of the passage than one that derives eternal standards from it is that God is describing his shaming of them in terms that the readers, in that age and place, could understand. For them, exposure of the skin was shameful, so it made sense to describe God's shaming of them in these terms. For most people living in modern American, it's not, and if Isaiah were speaking to us, he might use a starker degree of nakedness--of a level that most people would find shameful--or perhaps something along the lines of, "Grow long thy sideburns, and place upon thy legs the polyester, bell-bottomed pants; makest thou thyself to appear as a hippie, a raving lunatic, and thy shame shall be seen." If fundamentalists actually read real books in addition to the Bible (not saying that the Bible isn't a real book, but most fundies who read something other than the Bible aren't reading what I would consider real books), they might actually be capable not taking every single word of scripture literally. |
