SUITS, SUITS ME?
Im tired of wearing suits. They are expensive to buy, and upkeep. They are uncomfortable.
I made the decision on the first night of our big revival meeting to wear plain nice casual wear (polo, khakis, dress shoes) What happens, the first brother i come to says "wheres your suit", i said i didnt want to wear it tonite. He says, "man, of all nites you should have worn it." Did i feel crummy. I do notice every body quick to wear a suit on Sunday, but wait till wenesday, they look like they are dress to go to Wal-Mart or something. Double Standard. I think if you should wear a suit on sun, you should wear it on wed. Last i checked, A worship service is no different on sun, sun nite, wed nite or revivals, right? |

RE: SUITS, SUITS ME?
the last two times I have worn a suit was to my CPA firm Christmas parties the last two years. Church? Jeans or khakis and collared shirt.
When I was in college, I tried some kool-aid, but I didn't like it, and I didn't swallow. |

RE: SUITS, SUITS ME?
I actually like dressing up for Sunday church. I think men look sharp in suits! But I also understand that our culture is very casual and informal and I don't want ANYTHING to impede people coming to Christ besides the message itself, but definitely nothing extraneous. Thus I'm totally willing to give up formal clothing on Sunday morning if that makes the majority of people in our community feel more accepted and welcome when they come in.
I don't see a problem with having different dress standards for different times: Sunday morning is often a more formal time with more anthem-like hymns and a more hushed atmosphere (in my circles); Sunday night tended to be more of a casual family gathering with more testimonies and prayer requests and a less rigid structure; it felt more relaxed. Wednesday was even more relaxed with some people coming in after work. I don't see a problem with churches that do that; my only problem is church members or staff who harass people for NOT dressing up. The guy who scolded you, brobillyray, was not acting charitably, imo. "Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

RE: SUITS, SUITS ME?
1 Samuel 16:7
King James Version (KJV) 7But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. Matthew 6:5 King James Version (KJV) 5And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. I go to church to worship God, not to impress others or sell them anything. Since God isn't impressed by outward appearances, I choose to wear comfortable clothes because they are less likely to distract me from Him. You were probably dressed just like any visitor would be, and you would probably make that visitor feel very accepted. The Bible does not say they will know we are believers by our suits. They will know we are believers by love. |

RE: SUITS, SUITS ME?
I usually hate wearing a suit.
I am a teacher. I have worn them to school on occasion. I have a master's in ed. leadership and one day I will be a school principal, guidance officer, dean of students, or superintendent. I am not a fan. Especially when the same old tired old suit is worn four years past it's due date and 20 pounds too long. I think of the expression "an empty suit." Yuck. I'd much sooner be in a nice pair of jeans and a polo. Much sooner. My theory is that people in suits can be kind of intimidating to people who need my help--kids and parents. I'm not there to intimidate anyone. I'm there to help them improve their lives.. Sometimes they are ok. When we take our kids to DC to capitol hill--i wear a nice suit. It's ok to look nice and feel sharp once in a while. Day to day life, including sundays--no thank you. I don't want to show up at my own funeral in a suit. Joseph A Banks has a Buy 1 Get 2 Free sale this weekend.
I got two suits already. I'm buying ties on Friday. The Ark was built by a lone amateur, and the Titanic was built by an impressive group of professionals. |
