Sovereign Grace
Our new pastor and his wife love SG. I love the kids' albums they've put out. But I find most of their other music to resemble a dirge.
![]() Worship music - praise music - should sound JOYFUL. It should make you WANT TO PRAISE GOD. I'm not saying worship music in church should make people get up and dance in the aisles. There aren't enough ambulances in our little community to haul out the casualties. But for GOD's SAKE, don't put people to sleep! |

RE: Sovereign Grace
I like SG, but I wouldn't want to sing ONLY their music. I like a really good mix -- slow and fast, reflective and joyful, quiet and loud, old and new, traditional and contemporary, acapella and full band, complicated and simple, directed to God and directed to others -- VARIETY!
"Do not look so sad. We shall meet soon again.” “Please, Aslan,” said Lucy, “what do you call soon?” “I call all times soon,” said Aslan. |

RE: Sovereign Grace
Have you heard much Sovereign Grace music? I'm not a fan of all of it, but they have lots of upbeat songs. I'd say each album is half and half as far as upbeat versus reflective songs. The upbeat ones just don't happen to be their more popular songs.

RE: Sovereign Grace
I've always found their music pretty bland. Plus I'm not a big fan of the denomination any more.

RE: Sovereign Grace
I have quite a but if their music, and I like it. However, I have found that many of their songs do kind of sound like a dirge. There is a certain mindset that is very common among the Sovereign Grace Churches. It is the "I am a worm" mentality. I agree that I am not to promote myself and that I will be a sinner till I die or Jesus returns, and I am to only find my identity in Christ. However, it seems to me that SG has taken that too far. Almost like we need to constantly be reminding ourselves that we are sinners and we have no hope. I disagree. God has given us his Spirit, forgiven us, made us new creatures. We can do things that count. We can serve him acceptably. In their world, only the big shots can be praised, or at least that is my perception.

RE: Sovereign Grace
I pulled out my SG CDs and am listening to some as I work. There is one song that is pretty lively "Jesus My Only Hope" on "Songs for the Cross centered life. You can hear some of it here: Track 3.

RE: Sovereign Grace
I've had the pleasure of hearing Bob Kauflin play before a fairly small audience. I found his music to be over-the-top emotional (it appeared to me to be clearly fake). Others claimed to be "blessed" but I was creeped out. I guess I should be more charitable but on the other hand I'm not big for performance art masquerading as worship.
There are a couple songs my previous church would have for congregational singing which are OK, I guess, but it is really, really not my preference. I find Getty hymns to be a lot better. |
