It could be because of mixed bathing restrictions, clothing, whatever. In my case, it was a mother deathly afraid of water. Mixed swimming was not allowed, and as we didn't own a pool, that basically meant we never swam. I didn't learn how to swim until I went to college. And I still feel funny in a bikini. |

Because I care about the corneas of those around me, I don't wear a bikini. It's better for everyone involved that I have a little more coverage!

RE: Swimming Modestly
A couple of weeks ago I wore a bikini for the first time since I was like 8. Otherwise, I've always worn tankinis and one-pieces for swimming. The only time I went swimming in shorts and a t-shirt was at... *drum roll* fundy camp. And of course "mixed bathing" was not allowed.
Also..... Beowulf your PS skills are EPIC. |

RE: Swimming Modestly
That was a huge struggle for me as a then young mother of 3 girls who were not raised in a fundy church but by a fundy mom trying to instill godly bathing dress codes into them. For years I was too convicted from my fundy upbringing to wear a bikini in public, not that I don't have the body for it, and now since those convictions don't rule me, I proudly wear a bikini to the beach or pool. If godly men have a problem with it, they don't need to go to public pools where people swim and sun with little coverings.

The funny thing is this: When I was at Fundy U and in a Fundy church, and the preecher brayed against bikinis, when I saw one, I lusted like crazy. I have never figured out why. Now that i am past that and have no problem going to the pool, the lusting only happens if I am in a bad mood, like angry, or very tired. I know that this is someone's wife or daughter and I look, but don't stare or lust. And no, I am not gay. |

When other people are dressed a certain way. Teens might, but if you grew up with it being normal it's not so alluring or special. I abhor groups who force clothing onto people in cultures where it was never important for them. "ABRAHAM DIED FOR YOUR LOX AND MATZO BALLS!" |

It was not a big deal. Oh, I noticed when my sisters brought friends, but it was made clear that you were not to stare. And I learned not to, and we were not a particularly "christian" family. We brought beer to the swimming hole. |

RE: Swimming Modestly
I've always covered up when swimming. Not some ridiculous fundy contraption. But I'd wear board shorts over a one piece or something. And that was something I picked up from my public high school. All the girls were sensitive about their bodies, and covered up when we did swimming at school. If they couldn't get a note from their mum excusing them from phys ed because 'for private reasons'. Of course, they probably didn't as they grew past the awkward stage of adolescence, but I stopped taking phys ed by then, and never grew out of it the practice of covering up.
Now that I think about it, I think it's sad that my self-confidence was always so small. Why did I despise my own body so much? I mightn't be gorgeous, but it wasn't like I was fat or anything. *sigh* Our love is the digital transfer of information ![]()

RE: Swimming Modestly
I wear a one piece suit because I truly don't have the figure to get away with a bikini and I have too much compassion for the eyesight of those around me. Besides {sigh} there aren't that many places that sell 2X two piece swimsuits.
