The "Good-Better-Best" Principle
I remember getting this both at BJU and the Wilds. It was supposed to help you make proper decisions, but usually just heaped on more guilt.
For example: Music Good: Listen to classical music Better: Listen to conservative Christian music Best: Listen to sermons Free weekend: Good: Spend time with friends at the mall Better: Clean the closet and donate old clothes to Salvation army Best: Go soul-winning or on bus visitation Tax refund: Good: Buy a new computer Better: Buy child new clothes and shoes to replace outgrown Best: Donate to church building fund Now they will all tell you that there's nothing wrong with things in the "good" category. But, it is the best? Doesn't the Lord deserve your best? You really couldn't do anything without feeling guilty about it. |

RE: The "Good-Better-Best" Principle
It was even worse when they applied it to relationships. Heard that in society a lot.

RE: The "Good-Better-Best" Principle
Yep. I lived that mess for too many years. The variant form of this mindset is also known as God's Permissive or Perfect Will for your life.
I've also heard things like "walking as far away from the "edge" as possible". I guess it was believable at the time because I bought into it.

RE: The "Good-Better-Best" Principle
The quote I remember is "the greatest enemy of 'the best' is 'good.' "
It's what inspired this: http://www.stufffundieslike.com/2010/07/...your-best/ "It doesn't help to wear a hat on your head if your posterior is exposed." ~ PW "Don't make crazy your normal and then wonder why nobody agrees with you." ~ EC |

RE: The "Good-Better-Best" Principle
Thanks... I now have "Give of your best to the Master" stuck in my head, complete with unnecessary "h" before every vowel.

RE: The "Good-Better-Best" Principle
Pretty much every time I heard someone from the Wilds or BJ, I came away thinking. "It would be good if I just ignored 95% of that sermon, better if I had remembered to bring a book to read instead, and best if I had been in the hospital with a kidney stone."
Maybe they have a point? "Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side" |

RE: The "Good-Better-Best" Principle
Oh I remember this idea.
The funny thing is that it made me think of the fact I was told that the pastor shouldn't be held accountable for what he's done because he's a good man. Surely God deserves better, right? ![]() I guess these things only work one way. Our love is the digital transfer of information ![]()

RE: The "Good-Better-Best" Principle
I'm just glad I got God's best at salvation.
I walk with bare, hushed feet the ground Ye tread with boldness shod;
I dare not fix with mete and bound The love and power of God. - J.G. Whittier |
