Rick Santorum Campaigns at Crown College

If his campaign website is to be believed, Presidential hopeful Rick Santorum will be holding a "Rally for Rick" in the auditorium of Crown College at noon today.

I wonder if one of the students will be brave enough to try to hand him a gospel tract and convert him from his Catholic ways.  Perhaps they're operating today under the special exception that Roman Catholics and Mormons are Christians during election years.

Most evangelicals look to the Roman Catholic church for their moral philosophy, legal opinions, etc. The Roman Catholics carry nearly all the intellectual weight of the traditionalist side of the culture wars. There are very few evangelical institutions that contribute anything serious. Evangelicals provide the bodies and some of the money, but Catholics are the brain trust.

Yes. Which is the reason why things like the Healthcare Reform Act didn't get enough public outcry to matter. The Catholics were for it so the evangelicals basically had no clout.

Update 1: The rally was held in the 3,000-seat sanctuary of Temple Baptist Church, not at nearby Crown College as was initially planned. The church operates the college.

Catholic leadership was for it. Among the laypeople, it was a mixed bag. I don't personally know too many Catholics were for it, myself. I think it depends on where in th US those Catholics are.

And the leadership was for it based upon a promise from Democrats that health insurance, no matter what form it would take, would not force coverage of contraceptives or abortifacients.

Understood, but the political clout is theirs to wield.

And time has obviously (and sadly) proven that those promises were hollow.

Well, the ones making the supposed guarantees were the pro-life dems who find themselves out of office. It is curious that given the clout the Catholic Church was credited with, the Obama administration has worked pretty danged hard to offend them over the insurance issue. The politics of strange bedfellows should come with the risk of deep morning-after remorse.
