Even called out friends by name who like Gaga (including her teenage nieces...and she wonders why they can't stand her) to tell them that they are not as advanced as her. Like I said...for all their informing the rest of us we are dumb, these people are complete tools. ETA: Since I'm complaining about the woman's FB posts here... Just read her latest. She posted a link to a story about the last veteran of WWI in the UK dying. The comment with it informed us that the article is an opportunity for those of us "not as educated in matters of history" as her to learn about something and we really "must read it" and "become more informed and better human beings". Going back to Jordan's OP point...STFU!!! |

I know so many people like this. For whatever reason, they are uncomfortable with the idea of taste. Certain musicians may be better or worse when compared in certain categories, and certain people are probably more aware of the differences. But the issue of taste has nothing to do with a person's awareness of better/worse. I like all kinds of things I know are bad, Arby's sandwiches being one (I have been craving Arby's for so long!). I don't understand why people feel like they have to justify the things that appeal to them, or claim that their preferences make them more educated or valuable. And anyway, Lady Gaga is arguably more culturally and musically significant nowadays, regardless what we think of her. So you can tell your cousin that. :-) |

Gaga actually has a far superior voice technically. And is a real musician in that her goal was always to be a vocal performer whereas I saw Madonna on Anderson last week saying she just wanted to live in NYC and "be an artist" and had no idea what sort of artist. I'm not really a fan of either, but as you say, I don't understand the need to convince others that what you like is more cultured/intelligent/etc... My sister-in-law is exactly the same. I strongly suspect it is a self-esteem issue more than anything, a need to prove their own value by proving the value of their tastes. My sister-in-law is kind of worse. She doesn't post crap on FB, but she tries to force her friends and family to like it, too. If she likes a television show, she has to badger everyone into watching it, too. Everything has to be validated by other people liking it with her. |

And some of those groups can develop very obsessed and disturbed sub-cliques...says the figure skating fan who reads all the fan boards! That doesn't work for SiL. It is always supposed to be her immediate friends and family. My parents-in-law, to my husband's neverending frustration, tend to do as she says so she will not make their lives hell with badgering them. They have to eat at restaurants she likes (without her), watch shows she wants them to watch (again, without her), shop where she thinks they should shop...And as far as we can tell, they just do it because they want to avoid her tantrums. My husband ignores her commands about such things, and always has, but she blames his ignoring it on me. Makes my life fun! In some ways, my cousin is the same in that a fan board does not do it for her. People around her are supposed to like what she likes. And she must convince us always. But heaven forbid that we suggest something to her. I told her they might like Fringe as they like all the time-bending, alternate world, fantasy mixed with realism sort of stuff....answer was something about how Fox is not a smart network and American shows are all intellectually bankrupt and we should stop watching it at our house. |

Oh gosh, I've met people like that and quickly have put a safe distance between them and me. In their cases, it wouldn't be just STFU, but GTFO. You know what other kinds of people annoy the crap out of me? People who cannot possibly enjoy ANY movie they watch. They either hate a movie and waste no time in expressing it, or think a movie is "good BUT blah blah blah...." I can't stand these kinds of people either. Freaking killjoys. I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean 3, years ago with a bunch of friends, and one of them just complained the whole time on the way home. Now, POTC III may not have been the best one, but I am a complete POTC fan no matter what and I enjoyed it. I really wanted to sock him one. "Funny, you're the broken one, but I'm the only one who needed saving." |
