You can try:

Jack and coke
Manhattan: (on the rocks is good for beginners) it's whiskey and sweet vermouth and bitters (but you don't HAVE to put them in)

If you want to start enjoying the taste of whiskey, I would stick with a highball or jack and coke and little by little reduce the amount of soda.

Speaking of vodka, I recently tried vodka and Pom juice because there was no cranberry in the house. LOVED it! Much better than vodka and cran.

What kind of whiskey should we start out with? I already like Ginger ale so that should be easy to drink.

I bought a nasty "on sale" brand of wine last week and the only way I could finish it was with some apple juice. My folks actually have a drink mix machine that they use for theirs, but they aren't living anywhere close to us for us to learn from.

Mm, maybe in the burning-ness. I think whiskey has more flavor. I don't really like to drink vodka much except mixed with other things, but whiskey is delicious all by itself.

Maker's Mark, Knob Creek,

Anything by W.L. Wellers. Google it. It receives consistently high ratings and is very inexpensive. It's way better than Beam, Jack, etc., and cheaper.

I don't know how to tell whiskey from any of the other hundreds of bottles I see on the Class Six store shelf.

What are some of the regular brands that I might see that are worth trying?

It's brown and says "whiskey" on it. ;-)

Don has good brand suggestions. Bourbon might be a little easier than plain whiskey, because it's a little sweeter.

I don't remember seeing "whiskey" written on most of the bottles. They all look very similar to me as an ex Fundy...all very "forbidden evil fruits".

I've had some brandy in my Gluhwein at a restaurant. That wasn't bad at all and sweet sounds really good rather than bitter.
