RE: Coffee
We buy whole bean from the bulk section of one of the local stores and grind it and brew it in a french press.

Other than that I drink Cafe Bustelo and brew it as if I'm making regular coffee instead of espresso.

RE: Coffee
How do you like your french press lucrezaborgia? I have thought about getting one. But I gotta boil water first is that it? I'm a long term black and decker or mr. coffee el cheapo user.. Is the coffee THAT much better than from a drip?

I had a bunn for years but it began to leak. I need to replace mine soon as it is leaking a little
out the bottom onto my countertop...

Bean, I'll offer my two cents here if you don't mind. I love my french press. I actually own three of them. One big one for home, one old one I used at work, and a new one for work. I really don't like drip coffee anymore. I buy locally-roasted beans and grind them myself. The flavor of the coffee is much richer from a press than it is from any drip pot. It is rather simple to make, and definitely worth it.

When I was in college, I tried some kool-aid, but I didn't like it, and I didn't swallow.

Don't boil the water when you use a French press. Make sure to not grind the beans to much, you'll have to experiment to find the right grind. Stir the pot before letting it steep for four minuets and press. You will have some of the best tasting coffee you can get.

I don't think you will notice much of a difference if you still use uber cheap coffee. It's a little more work but not significantly more unless you are completely brain-dead in the mornings and need a cup or at least the smell of coffee brewing in order to get out of bed. What I like best about it is that I can brew some pretty strong coffee with it and then I can carry the press with me to wherever I am in the house.

Err...how do you get the water hot then?

I sometimes mix whatever coffee my fiance uses with a scoop or two of my espresso. I don't have issues with using a finer grind and don't mind sediment in the bottom of my cup.

On the flip-side...I use the French press for loose-leaf tea as well.

RE: Coffee
Heat the water to just boiling, or boil it and the let it sit for a bit. If the water is too hot, it will scorch the grounds and affect the flavor.

RE: Coffee
thanks everyone! Sounds like the next time I am in a store that has these things, I will be picking one up.

RE: Coffee
You need a conical burr bean grinder.

I heat the water in the microwave in a separate container and then pour that into the press.

RE: Coffee
I have a bean grinder Donb. A conical burr bean grinder isn't a special kind of grinder is it? Mine was kind of a cheaper one--maybe 20 bucks. I can grind from coarse to powder fine. Will that work?

RE: Coffee
I just have to say that the most recent comment in the food and drink section was in "coffee" by bean. And that made me chuckle a little Smile

As far as coffee goes, my parents keep getting annoyed because I have none in the house. Well, there's some decaf for my oldest daughter, but I'm assured that doesn't count. I used to be a big coffee drinker, but now I just like coca-cola.
