A couple of good ones:

Rand Hummel -
He always wore clown face paint and used to tell us he would drive through the drive thru with his whole family in face paint. Oh ya, and he thought it was cool to run up the down escalator. I always found these very strange.

He told us in one of his sermons that a girl came to him who was raped by her stepfather. He told her that she had to forgive him or her sin of non-forgiveness was as bad as his sin (true story).

Skit where he was an "effeminate" bull and said "Snort, snort" in his best gay voice. Still haunts me.

Oh and his sermon where he would quote every TV show broadcast and mention some anti-God message. "And the part in China Beach when there was a cross erected and Judy flipped it off".....

Tom Farrell (paraphrase) -
Athletes have discipline and deny themselves to reach their goal What they do is not legalism, its called being an athlete.

Ken Collier -
Pulls me into the kindergarten room of my fundy school and confronts me with "Don't go to Liberty University". I ask why and he says "Bob Jones is just better for your spiritual walk". "People who go to Liberty just aren't as strong Christians".

Every time I would come home from the Wilds and take a hammer to my "Rock" music. Do you know how many times I ended up buying Roxette's Joyride album (dont judge me on my music tastes Smile

)

I have so many memories of the Wilds, but I must say CIT was really fun. We also had a good time during our senior class trip. I wore my Liberty University sweatshirt proudly and no one really commented on it (shocking). My biggest issues were Rand, Ken and Tom. These dudes had no care for anything outside of their little fundy world. How many devout Christian kids doubted their salvation because of their preaching?

Ah, Danny B. He was a year ahead of me and my roommate my freshman year, his sophomore year. Nice guy, but he got sucked into the system a bit. Was still a nice guy afterwards, maybe a little too nice. Nice in a frustrating sort of way. BTW, ever see his dad? You want :shudder:, meet Mr. Benitez Sr. Guy works construction and is MASSIVE.

Hey, Marie was and is a babe. It is amazing what she has been able to do since her brain tumor. I hear they are going to tour this year??? Their new album is due out in February. [Image: woot-035.gif]

Hey, I heard it in my head as soon as he mentioned it.

Kinda like sitting in special chapel with Sketch Erikson or one of those other music evangelists - watching their slides of album covers saying "got that one...yep got that one...oh, that one my parents found...I need to get that one...that ones on my mix tape..."

I believe this man has a good heart but bad theology.

To this day, I still respect Ken Collier. He is a genuine man. Rand to me seems to be the know it all and has a cliche for every situation and Tom is just....well.....Tom (abraisive, judgemental, mean spirited, narrow minded - the list goes on and on).

Wow, I'm really old. When I went to The Wilds, Ken Collier and Tom Farrell were counselors. We listened to Ken Hay blather on. Ron Hamilton directed the choir - "We Are More than Conquerors." We had to endure a "concert" by Frank and Flora Jean (we were told we'd have to pay $25 to see them in NYC). A few of us with John Bircher parents were pulled aside to listen to Carl Blythe go on about the evils of communism.

I <3 ed every minute of it. I was such a fundy. I gave testimonies. I enjoyed the bland music. I thought the counselors were great. What a difference 3 decades have made. I wouldn't go back for ANYTHING.

I'd never even heard of the Wilds till I got to BJU. As a freshman, I spent the first 3 months in a state of confusion, utterly mystified by our dorm supervisor's (Priscilla Olivero) regular suggestion that we sing this or that hymn "The wilds way." Then everyone would proceed to sing it to a tune I'd never heard. I spent a lot of time trying to figure this out. My best guess was that they somehow thought the "new" tune was somehow less reverent and staid ("wilder") than the original.

Finally, I was seated near the front during one of our dorm meetings, and I had the opportunity to raise my hand and ask her what "the wilds way" meant. She shot me a dirty look, then talked to me in a disapproving and condescending way that eventually led to my having to meet her in private to deal with my attitude problem. I always thought it was pretty ironic that someone who didn't know who most of the great figures in church history were considered it a mark of spiritual immaturity that I didn't know what the Wilds was.

What is with this? I've seen it a lot. There's a large, well-known IFB church in my area (big supporters of BJU) and everyone thinks of them as stuck-up and self-righteously superior. People from my home church joked at people at BJ being that way too. Why?????? It really upsets my spirit that people can take an innocent question and use it as an opportunity to exalt themself and put someone else down. The complete lack of true humility and love in the fundy world sickens me.

My guess is something along the lines of "knowledge puffs up, and love builds up." The IFB focuses on knowledge - Sunday school, AM service, PM service, Wed. night, Bible studies during the week, chapel, personal Bible reading time. All that studying!!!! All that learning! To what end? To feel superior to others? To play a game of "holier than thou" because of what they KNOW? Jesus is not in that AT ALL!!!!
