Have you ever been at the WILDS? What have been some of your experiences?

Never went to the "real" WILDS. We went to the one in the Rockies. I liked the scenery, and I was amazed that as a camper I was allowed to wear JEANS at camp. Other than that, hmm ...

I went to the WILDS every year of junior high and high school--7 years in a row. Always exhausting, physically and spiritually. Their main goal was to keep you busy every second with services, "fun" activites and other crap. Force-fed fun and lots of preaching.

Were you forced to give your "testimony" about your experiences when you got back to your church?

haha yes! And I tried to always make it very spiritual and upright sounding Big Grin

Went once, as an adult for a retreat. vowed that I would never go back without tools to disconnect that dang speaker in the cabin that would wake you up with Wilds, Soundforth, and Majesty Recordings - the leatherman just couldn't get it done. I think I would rather be woken up by R. Lee "Sound off like you've got a pair" Ermey

I didn't give a testimony, I don't remember what was said it was some counseling guy from BoJo. I remember lots of "Special numbers" - their property is absolutely spectacular, did all the long hikes down to the different waterfalls. Got carsick and chucked breakfast on the side of the road driving out of the valley.

The physical side of the campsite was excellent. I enjoyed all my hikes, including my forbidden trip to Third Falls. Big Grin

Now, as far as the spiritual aspect, I disagree with a lot of what they do. Not even sure where to begin. Let's just say that strategies they used to train their summer staff were disturbingly similar to the way the government of North Korea treats its citizens. They tell you how to sing, how to have "fun," how to speak, what church to go to (Bethany Baptist at Brevard NC, or Bethany Bible at Hendersonville NC), what Bible version to use, and how to think (I am not kidding).

The WILDS' staff is not notorious for their intellectual prowess...

Went twice as a teen with my youth group at the time. I enjoyed most of the activities but found the constant busyness enforced on us exhausting. I remember being disappointed there wasn't much time to be alone and just process things. It was as if we couldn't be trusted to be alone and that they wanted to use EVERY minute possible to cram in spiritual things. And yes we had to give testimonies upon our return since the church helped sponsor it. I'd be really curious to see what everyone in the group is like now. I also noticed how most staff were PCC'ers / BJU / etc and promoted their school as they had opportunities.
