I don't really know where this thread should go, but I really want to know the answer to this. If fundies are supposed to stay away from evil and evil-appearing things, why does the Beka phonics program use the clue word "smoke" for the special sound "sm"? Why can't they use the word "smile"? The picture they use is of smoke coming out a chimney, but what if you don't see the picture?

Yeah, it's Monday morning and I haven't had enough sleep the last several nights.

They were probably using examples they know, in which case it makes sense. I mean, every fundy knows what a cigarette is because the evils of them are so often preached. However, I'm not sure any of them have ever heard of smiling.

Those guys abstain from the appearance of evil when it suits them (ie when they can use it to control others) only.

That's one of the problems with the whole trying to avoid all appearance of evil: it's impossible. Early in our marriage, my husband and I figured out the ridiculousness of fundy horror at being seen walking out of a movie theater but their complete indifference at being seen walking out of a video store, despite the fact that NO ONE KNEW WHAT VIDEOS THEY WERE RENTING. Avoiding the appearance of evil became just a way of condemning and controlling other believers, as they would pick and choose which things were "worldly" and which they didn't care about. I've only recently started noticing that they were always concerned about stylish clothes being "worldly", but never seemed to think that the newest model of vehicle was worldly.

If the hypocrisy doesn't drive you crazy, it can actually be pretty amusing to notice all the ways fundies fail the "separation" test.

Indeed. I was just amused at how the people who make up all kinds of rules about behavior that might appear evil would use the word "smoke" when it could mean something evil to others.

There is no possible way to obey the verse as the KJV people intend it, because there is always something we might do that could appear evil to others. I mean, what if someone mistakes that artificial vanilla extract I bought for the real stuff and wigs out because I purchased alcohol? Or the long skirt I'm wearing is denim and not some ugly polyester print?

That is probably intended to use a tract as its visual aid, "Where will you spend eternity? Smoking or Non-Somoking?"
