Tho I think the EU does this with citizens of other EU nations. We simply do not have the resources to effectively shut our borders. Why not make it so that whoever asks for an SSN get's one? SSN's were never meant to be an indication of immigration status or identification. Require all employees to be treated equally under the law regardless of immigration status. As of now, there are several tiers of laws regarding employees and pay. Maybe require companies to hire a certain percentage of citizens and make it easier for companies to determine who is a citizen and who isn't. Tax non-citizens at higher rates. Don't have the required papers to be here? Fines, fines, and more fines. Jailing and deporting is a huge expense that we don't see much return on.
Make tax credits and any tax benefits for citizens only. "ABRAHAM DIED FOR YOUR LOX AND MATZO BALLS!" |

RE: LMPS: Let my People Stay
Locking the border down.
So Greg, what are your ideas about locking the border? I'm not sure we want to shoot three thousand unarmed persons walking over the border every day, even if we would only have to do it for a few days, until the word spread. Setting up minefields may a bit more palatable, since it is a passive defense. But the first time someone films a victim dying slowly of their wounds since no help can reach this person, no that would not be acceptable to most of us. Hiring the Sinaloa Cartel to do the dirty job for us on the other side of the border? No, I don't think that would fly either. Greg, If we put enough military resources into this, we could capture most of them. But simply dumping them on the other side of the border is not enough of a deterrent. (They will simply try again tomorrow.) Expanding on Myotch's idea: give all "removables" a special work permit that will ensure that we tax them at a much higher tax rate... Not sure it would work. It would require the cooperation of employers. The same employers who are not declaring them now since they are paying them below minimum wage... Still thinking. RE: LMPS: Let my People Stay
We could annex all of Central America; then everyone would be a citizen, no matter where they are.

RE: LMPS: Let my People Stay
Annexing Central America will not do.
Considering the amount of effort American companies just invested into getting CAFTA railroaded through the legislatures of all five Central American countries, there is NO WAY American companies will accept an annexation that would mean establishing a decent minimum wage standard, having to obey REAL environmental protection regulations and give up the sweet heart deal they just gained, where they currently have a legislatively enforced competitive advantage over any competing local company. US cannot afford to give up any source of cheap raw materials and captive markets. For every difficult and complicated question there is an answer that is simple, easily understood and wrong." H.L. I thought migrant workers were mostly legal? We don't have to pay them a decent wage if they are migrant workers...

RE: LMPS: Let my People Stay
That is part of our double standards:
We want all illegals deported at the same time we benefit from their work picking the food we eat, cleaning the offices we work at, doing our yard work and construction, and taking care of the worst jobs in our society. RE: LMPS: Let my People Stay
I think "dichotomy" is the better word. People want both.
The greater concern, I think, is in the border states, who have to deal with several criminal aspects of illegal immigration. Once they make it here or in the heartland, methinks people are more ok with "illegals" as neighbors. One great concern is the amount of money that goes out of country by illegals. My community benefits by me and my work, and my spending. My community would benefit much less if our small house was suddenly multi-family, and much of the money made in my household were going to another country. The Ark was built by a lone amateur, and the Titanic was built by an impressive group of professionals. |
