Am I a hipster? (or, Music that Makes me Happy)
Clem Snide - Moment in the Sun (I love songs that have a delicious irony to them.) [+2 on the hipster scale - obscure artist, and love of irony]
Espen Lind, Askil Holm, Alejandro Fuentes, Kurt Nilsen - Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. It's probably the most beautiful song ever, and to hear 3 Norwegians and a Chilean sing it with a simple acoustic guitar accompaniment is like feeling the painful bliss of first love all over again. the Decemberists - Mariner's Revenge Song. Their creativity in this period song is virulently contagious. (+ 3 for hipster. High art from a kindof obscure band. ) Pretty much anything by Beck [+1 on the h.s. His music is also filled with irony or under-the-radar mocking of whole groups of people. But, he's popular.) Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun, Add it Up, Gone Daddy Gone. [Hipsters are kindof open about sexual exploits. Not that I am, but I kind of like how the Violent Femmes talk about it, even if they seem vulnerable when they do. Hipsters are also marked by apathy. [+1,-1. Flat zero on the hipster scale.] Gnarles Barkely - Gone Daddy Gone. Ceelo really gets the relationship between Rap, hip hop, punk, and new wave. Perfect remakeof a Violent Femmes classic. [Hipsters like deep meaning, but in a shallow, do-nothing kind of way]. Gogol Bordello - Through the Roof 'N' Underground. Russian-American folk punk at it's finest. I discovered the song when watching the indie movie "Wristcutters: A Love Story" (which is a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours). Any hit by Coldplay. (-1,000 on the h.s. Evidently, there is a uniting hatred of anything Coldplay among hipsters). The Ark was built by a lone amateur, and the Titanic was built by an impressive group of professionals. |

RE: Am I a hipster? (or, Music that Makes me Happy)
My husband also enjoys Gogol Bordello, and Wristcutters. He bought GB sweatshirt, which sadly, is too small for him. He also likes Leonard Cohen. I like Coldplay. Although I wouldn't want to be called a 'hipster'. Its just shorthand for 'pretentious douchewaffle'.
