This series on Nat Geo has been really good.

"It takes a lot to leave the only life you’ve ever known—for one you’ve been told will lead you straight to hell. And with little possibility of normal contact with your family ever again, turning your back on the Amish order is an immense undertaking, and a choice that’s not made without tremendous consideration. In the new ten-part series Amish: Out of Order, follow the trials and tribulations of individuals who have made the decision to leave the Amish community behind. Due to their religious beliefs, most Amish refuse to be photographed or videotaped—even ex-Amish risk permanent shunning by their family and community for appearing on camera. The ex-Amish in this program accept that risk."

Mose Gingerich, an ex-Amish of about 9 years, has basically formed an underground railroad for other young adults escaping the Amish community.

Many of the young adults escaping are from Old Order Amish families and are literally shunned if they leave. Having been in large, close families, this is very difficult to go through - cruel even. Mose has tried to form a supportive social network for these ex-Amish.

Although my former fundy church was not as extreme, many of the basic legalistic beliefs are very similar. Watching these ex-Amish struggle with their past as they integrate into mainstream society has been very thought-provoking.

That looks very interesting.

I know a lot of people who seem to regard the Amish with enormous respect, but I've always wondered about how repressive it must be if you didn't agree with their standards.

I have been ADDICTED to that show.

I have found the show very interesting. That young English girl that wants to join the Amish makes me sad, Ashley? She seems desperate for someone to love & accept her. I just don't see the Amish being able to provide that for her.

I've seen a few episodes on demand. I couldn't help but see the parallels between leaving IFB and leaving the Amish way of life--basically leaving behind everything you know for a world you are pretty much unprepared to live in.

Mose criticizes the Amish for using the Amish name to promote goods or services weather its English or Amish folk doing it. He says his case is different because he is EX Amish. But in the end all parties are using the Amish name to market as they wish. He uses media, old couple for bed and breakfast, and the store to sell goods. Granite the store should maybe specify "Amish like goods" or something. Ex Amish, English, or Amish its all about using the name for marketing. He is somewhat being a hypocrite in my opinion.

Finally saw the show tonight (waiting for the DWtS finale). Very interesting, I'm taping the rest of the ones on this evening to watch later.
