How loud should the church music be? - pastor's wife - 03-05-2012 06:53 PM

I had an interesting discussion with someone today who was frustrated that her church was dropping its traditional service and using contemporary music in both Sunday services. Unlike most of our fundy families, she didn't DISLIKE the praise band, but she did consider the music too loud!

I recently attended a worship service with an awesome band, but the music was so loud that I couldn't hear myself sing. I didn't even know if I was on tune! I couldn't hear anyone singing around me either. I know it makes me sound like an old fogey, but the music was too loud for me! I want to be able to hear myself and the congregation as well as the band.

So what do you think? How loud is too loud?

You didn't have a "turn it up I can't hear it from here" option.

Actually I picked the last one, there is certainly a place for loud music, but I am personally a big fan of more contemplative music in worship. It makes no difference if its the band rockin' out some Kutless or the BJU style full orchestra/organ choir wall of sound - either way I tend to respond with a "meh"

Give me a good, quiet song with meaningful lyrics and I am much more drawn into the attitude where I worship best, but that's just me. Keep the drums in the aquarium and back off the electric stuff, piano, guitar, and vocals would be more than enough for 80% of the music I like in a worship service.

Of course I recognize that this is just my preference and would love to worship with any of y'all no matter what crazy or boring preferences you have.

I think there are times for different types of music. There are times for the focus to be on the instruments, and there are times to have the focus on helping people to sing. Times for some loud jubilation and times for quiet focus.

There aren't many churches that seem to embrace diversity though. They all seem to pick one and stick with it, lol.

A good sound board person can help make all the difference. My hubby can't stand to sit in the pews and let someone else do the sound at church.

As Tiarali said, there's a time and place for super loud music, as there's a time and place for soft playing and singing. Each of us is unique and we praise God in different ways.

I voted for other. Not loud enough that I get a headache.
The headache comes after the screaming from the preacher. Amen? Tongue

I voted for loudly but don't drown folks out. I think that many people will be more self conscious if the music is too quiet that they can hear how off key they really are. Especially since many of these praise services don't use sheet music or books for the crowd to sing with. I for one, MUST have the sheet music to sing as I'm so used to having it that I go crazy without it. But I can hit the notes on key when I can read them on the music page. Wink

My wife and I have refused to go back to certain churches because of the volume of the music. I don't want rock concert volume in a church. It's a worship time, not watching a performance time.

Doesn't this belong in the 'I want to start a fight' thread?

redbeardiam, it sure could, couldn't it? LOL

There are so many different purposes for music in church - sometimes I like loud, joyful music that passionately praises, sometimes I like quiet, personal, and meditative songs that are introspective, other times I like earnest expositions of Biblical truth. Sometimes I want to be blessed by a performance, but other times I want to join in and sing my heart out.

How come you only have 5 stars and MANY more posts than I ? Tongue

PW, that's exactly how I feel except that I tend to default to the fundy-style music that I was raised on. I just can't get the desire for it out of my head. The CCM stuff isn't as satisfying to me as the hymns and choir stuff we used to do. Undecided
