I teach history and civics. I deal in parallels. I don't come out and tell this to my students, but some get it.
We just listened to a radio program today called "Mississippi: State Of Siege" and it was about how "mighty whitey" was gonna tell all those troublemaking colored folk to mind their own damn business and quit stirring up trouble. Of course, the interviewed people painted nice justificiations for Jim Crow, how good it was about the white commies came down to agitate, and how it was the NATURAL ORDER OF THINGS.
They also went on about how it was time to "take a stand against Jew-dish-al tyrnE" and that they as good Misssuhsip-eans was gonna stand their ground. (Spelled like it sounded to get the ENTIRE EFFECT)
They played tv commericals from the Citizens Council tv show from 1960, encouraging Mississippians to fight for "freedom" and "representative democracy."
Here's my question, Mr. Greg. Had Mississippi voted on Brown V. Board of Education in 1954, how would that have gone? In 65? In 70?
You tell me.
I'm not sure how it would have gone. I would also say it's apples and oranges. So because some folks in Mississippi in the 50's, perhaps a majority were confused/misdirected/looney (actually what they were, were products of their environment/upbringing) doesn't mean that what the liberal Judges did in CA is a good thing.
You seem pretty reasonable in most of your comments and I would hope that when guaging someone's life you take into account their upbringing/culture, as a teacher I would hope that would be a perogative for understanding human behaviour in an historical context.
I believe that the 9th Circuit thwarted the will and the vote (voted on twice,btw) of the folks of California. I think this is very wrong. Obviously you are free to disagree.

Greg, we hit that point over and over again. When kids hear some of the loaded language, we talk about it...how WE know better today....but in MS, in 1960, it was just the way it was..

It's very simple.
People don't "select" their color, homosexuals choose that lifestyle, (I believe) If they are "bent" toward homosexuality (not admitting that they are) then they most certainly "choose" to act on that.
I detest homosexuals hijacking the civil rights arguments for this very reason. I can just imagine if I were black how outraged this would make me.

I don’t think you understand what ‘civil rights’ are. You should read what ‘rights’ are protected by civil rights. Civil rights apply to religion and that is a choice. Do you ‘detest’ the way religion has ‘hi-jacked’ civil rights? While you are imagining how ‘black’ people feel, how do you think ‘they’ feel when people ask for fair treatment regardless of their religion?
