So according to Driscoll the Brits have lying cowards for Bible teachers - Tooktheredpill - 01-14-2012 08:39 PM

Driscoll:
Quote:Let’s just say this: right now, name for me the one young, good Bible teacher that is known across Great Britain. You don’t have one – that’s the problem. There are a bunch of cowards who aren’t telling the truth.

Of course Driscoll attempted damage control: http://pastormark.tv/2012/01/12/a-blog-for-the-brits

But if you listen to the actual interview (http://www.premier.org.uk/unbelievable) you'll see that Driscoll pretty much lies about the context/nature of the interview. (IMO, Justin Brierley (the host) does not come across at all as a "personally offended critic [that] had finally gotten his chance to exercise some authority over me.")

You can read Brierley's response here: http://www.christianitymagazine.co.uk/markdriscoll

The Brits aren't exactly taking kindly to the criticism (nor should they):
Quote:It doesn’t sound like Driscoll is rejoicing the ministry of Mike Pilavaci, Andy Croft, Jo Saxton and the impact these preachers are having on tens of thousands of young people each summer at Soul Survivor. Doesn’t sound like he’s particularly appreciative of Rico Tice coming from the other end of the theological spectrum whose course is being used by hundreds of churches. We can’t call Nicky Gumbel young anymore but I haven’t heard a lot of love coming from Mars Hill for Alpha either. Apparently he hasn’t got anything good to say about Karl Martin in Edinburgh nor Pete Greig at HTB or Ness Wilson in Loughborough. (I know the women preacher thing is going to be a problem for him but I am just saying…) With one dismissive comment he writes off all of their ministries and many other fine preachers too many to mention here.

To write off a whole nations worth of preachers based on the criteria that they need to be “well known” is unhelpful anyway. It plays to the celebrity culture that Driscoll has become enmeshed in. Its one of my problems with the satellite church model – why beam yourself to campuses where you are not physically present so that people can watch you – why not raise up local pastors who know their sheep. So how Driscoll can say that we don’t have any young preachers that are any good without looking at the ministry week by week by young pastors in some very difficult places is arrogant and self absorbed.

Quote:finally gotten his chance to exercise some authority over me

That's a very telling phrase. Very.

My thoughts exactly. I mean who thinks in terms of people "exercising authority" over them?

Someone in an elder-led ministry?

Uh.. NT Wright? J.G. Dunn? Hello... Now whether scholars of this caliber should be called mere "Bible teachers" or not I don't know but they both rate higher than him in my book of people who know what the Bible is about and author books about what they know and these books presumably teach people things.

He was not referring to a church context. The elder thing only applies within the church...

The question was "who would think in terms of people 'exercising authority' over them?"

But I'm not defending anything he has said. I was answering the question.

What I meant was that being in an elder-led ministry doesn't justify thinking in those terms outside of that ministry. It's just not normal.

There are people who think like that (ATI, I believe?) but it's a major warning signal.

Exactly.
