Michelle Bachmann/Illegal Aliens - greg - 12-10-2011 08:20 PM

I don't think Ms Bachmann has much of a chance to be the Republican nominee, however I have appreciated her stance on a wide range of issues, and her plain speaking, but the other night she soared right in front of my eyes. She was being interviewed on Oreilly and he questioned her pretty strongly on her views about our illegal alien situation. Of course she said we must stop the flood of illegals into our country at our southern border, but when pressed further she stated that when an illegal alien is stopped for some police reason and is found to be in the country illegally they need to be "deported" immediately. Oreilly acted as though someone had cursed his mother, and said something about breaking up familes. Bachamann looked at him as if he were a martian and said "Bill I think it's time someone stood up and enforced the laws of the U.S." I could have kissed her right then and there.

Where does that put me when you're to the right of Bill Oreilly?

Just got to finish with my favorite line, said it before, but hey I'm old!!

"Calling an illegal alien an undocumented worker is like calling a drug dealer an unlicensed pharmacist. "

Yes because illegals are totally the main problem in America right now.

And submission means every wife should be submissive but her.

And we should close the embassy in Iran.

And HPV makes kids retarded.

And Swine Flu comes from democrat presidents.

And carbon dioxide is completely harmless.

And the Founding Father's work tirelessly to end slavery.

And...

Yes, she's quite sane/informed. (Quite meaning she is neither in this case).

I support immigration 100% (legal immigration, that is) I want all criminal, illegal invaders out of this country yesterday, all 15 million of them.

This is one issue that the Republicans are about as sorry as the Democrats on.

Greg, if you support immigration let's make it a fair and reasonable process instead of an impossible one. I know of a legal, resident alien, Mexican national with a stable family and good jobs....They cannot afford the attorney fees/paperwork/documentation fees. Even the paperwork to stay and work here LEGALLY is extremely expensive.

I want a system that is simple, fair, easy, and welcoming. It shouldn't cost a fortune. And if someone came over here "illegally" as a kid and has lived here for 20 years as a productive citizen, they should be allowed to stay.

Big business interests use this as a double edged sword. They want these laws strict so they can keep these immigrants under their thumb working for peanuts. It's work many white people WILL NOT DO. Period. It's also an issue that get's people all riled up and agitated, but it is at the most basic levels one that appeals to xenophobia and racism. We have a long history of complaining about "those people."

I recommend you read a story.

Finally, in my opinion, Ms. Bachmann is full of it. She appears to be horridly ill informed and to me it seems that she believes all of the right wing b.s. that conservative right wing Christianity have made up about the history of this country.

Current "illegal" immigrants aren't doing anything different than the pilgrims did taking great risk to come uninvited to a country for the opportunities presented.

Exactly Rob. There were no rules when the first ones came. There were very few when my great great grandpa came in 1868. It was "what's your name? Where are you from?" They had to have someone here to make sure they could support themselves--that was it. Not only that, great great grandpa was able to get 160 acres of land for free from the government if he built a permanent structure to live in and planted some trees! Not complaining, it worked out great for him and great for our family. About the same time he was being welcomed here and into the late 1800s, the door was being shut on Chinese immigrants. Later, eastern europeans found out how racially motivated the immigration system was.

Let's see...15 million out of 307 million (I'm not sure the former number is accurate because many illegals have decided to go back home or to not come at all due to the economy) is a grand total of 5% of the population. You cannot tell me that 5% of the population is the main problem with this country right now.

The lobbyists have their hands in that pot too. We live under a quota system for both permanent and temporary workers and many industries have a lock on who is accepted under that system. I fully believe though that we should encourage long-term immigration instead of temp-workers. The tourism industry thrives on temporary labor via the H-1B Visa and they pay these people the lowest wages possible. A former boyfriend of mine is a sys-admin for a very large corporation and other than him and one other person the rest of the IT team is from India on H-1B visas.

Totally agree with you that our system could use an overhaul, and that we should make it much easier and less expensive, also agree that big business games the system to make it better for themselves, and then we part ways fairly dramatically. If I were in charge. I would give illegals notice that I was deporting every single one of them and give them, say a week to get their affairs in order and report to the deportation sites that I would have scattered around the country in known "illegal" communities. Then the gloves would come off and I would start grabbing them, wherever they were, just like all criminals should be treated, including the illegals that have been here for twenty years, in fact they would be the first ones that I would go after.

Not sure what your problem is with Ms Bachmann, it appears that she walks her talk, and that to me means an awful lot.

As far as made-up stuff about the founding of our country, I've seen more re-writing of American history right here on SFL the last two years than I have ever seen the entire rest of my life.

If you don't believe that this country was founded upon the Judeo-Christian ethic you too have consumed too much kool-aid. (if you want to argue the point, pls note carefully what I said, I did not say that Baptists came over on the Mayflower with their KJV's and settled this fine country. I have examined this issue, the stuff I have seen spouted on here about our country's origins has been nearly ridulous)

RE: Michelle Bachmann/Illegal Aliens - bean - 12-11-2011 08:44 PM

I won't dispute that those who wrote our founding documents and were our first leaders believed for the most part in the Judeo-Christian value system. However, I will not accept a David Barton re-write either.

My problem with Ms. Bachmann? I think she makes stuff up. HPV vac. causing mental retardation? Small businesses facing all of the tax hikes? I could go on and on. Not true. Not true. Not true. Not true.
