During child abuse awareness I changed my FB icon to Pedobear. That particular campaign made me want to punch a hole in the wall. I have quite a few friends who lived through abuse and I'm constantly dealing with issues with my fiance from his childhood abuse. I'm pretty sure seeing cartoons all over FB wasn't what convinced CPS to finally do their job and protect my stepdaughter. It sure as heck wasn't the multiple reports of her threatening to kill her children.

I understand the frustration with those types of campaigns. On the other hand, I know some abuse survivors who participated and were making a pretty big statement by doing so. Maybe it's completely ineffective in preventing any abuse, but can be a way for survivors to publicly own their stories at a time when people are paying attention. Maybe different things for different people?

I think changing profiles pics and/or posting something about a cause are fine. For example, a member of our former church passed away in a car accident last week. Several friends changed their profile pics to pics of him or shared his obituary. It was a great tribute. If everyone had cut-and-pasted the same canned tribute or posted, "If you miss XXX, then change your profile pic to one of him for one hour," then that would have cheapened the memorialization of his life.

They also go around very very slowly. So it ends up being "sister week" or "cancer awareness month" or "one hour to prevent ______________" all the time.

Totally ineffective. I think all it does is give people the illusion that they care and have done something. And the "guilt" factor makes it all so unappealing.

Yep. So basically people don't have to feel guilty that they haven't actually done anything to make the world a better place, because they changed their status for an hour.

This kind of thing could be an illustration of a grace-filled approach to Christianity vs. the fundamentalist one: in one, you're moved from love to do something; in the other, you're coerced and guilted into behaving a certain way, a way that someone else decided was the right thing.

If I'm moved to post something to my wall, I should just do it, not try to manipulate other people into joining me. If the comment touches other people, they'll often copy and paste without your having to put on the high pressure guilt tactics.

Exactly. I see nothing wrong with posting about a cause, or changing a profile pic, or whatever. If I feel touched by something, I'll post it. I don't need to be coerced into reposting; if I was, then for me whatever I reposted just wouldn't seem as genuine.

My brother calls this phenomenon 'slacktivism'. Doing something without actually doing anything.

‎"'Scripture was not given to increase our knowledge but to change our conduct.' That is so true."

Umm, I'm pretty sure that the Bible says that Scripture was written "so that you may know that you have eternal life." It didn't say "so that you may do everything you can to merit eternal life even though it's a free gift."

Just saw this one...

All work no play makes jack a dull boy but all work no God makes jack with a lost soul.
