What is with this? I've seen it a lot. There's a large, well-known IFB church in my area (big supporters of BJU) and everyone thinks of them as stuck-up and self-righteously superior. People from my home church joked at people at BJ being that way too. Why?????? It really upsets my spirit that people can take an innocent question and use it as an opportunity to exalt themself and put someone else down. The complete lack of true humility and love in the fundy world sickens me.

My guess is something along the lines of "knowledge puffs up, and love builds up." The IFB focuses on knowledge - Sunday school, AM service, PM service, Wed. night, Bible studies during the week, chapel, personal Bible reading time. All that studying!!!! All that learning! To what end? To feel superior to others? To play a game of "holier than thou" because of what they KNOW? Jesus is not in that AT ALL!!!!

OK, I'll get down off my soap box now.

Its a substitute for what many of them don't have. A relationship with Christ. Hate to be judgmental and blunt about it, but you know how many people I have encountered, many from the BJ orbit who exhibited this behavior and have either turned out to be a complete phony mired in sexual sin, or have abandoned the faith completely.

And I actually have reached a point where someone who acts in this way, I just assume is either unsaved and living a lie, or they are totally immature spiritually. Since any approach to help them would be pointless, I have just basically written them off.

You may preach it and I will listen even though I am a man Big Grin

I think the head knowlegde is what leads so many IFBer to doubt their salvation. There is so much focus on knowledge that people are easy targets when the subject of "you know that in your head, but do you really believe it in your heart" or "if you really believed what you know, you wouldn't act that way" and blah, blah, blah.....it really is a slippery slope.

Ok, here's one. I went to the WILDS every summer for camp for about 7 years. I always loved it. I grew up IFB and bought into everything so yeah, I loved it. As I grew up and left the IFB church, I had all these random memories that were perplexing.
There was a time when the speaker told all of us (at one of the many services there) about a time when a girl came up to him and told him that she had been sexually abused. He proceeded to tell us how he handled it. Apparently, he told the girl she was lying.
Why would he do that and why would he TELL us all about it??? As an adult now, I think back at that and wonder....and here's what I came up with.
Girls, if you have been sexually abused, DON"T report it, because no one will believe you.
Nice huh???

Do you know who the speaker was?

In the game of Golf we refer to that as "Par"

its the expected result for that particular hole

Argh. Thanks for hitting one of my "anti-Fundy" hot buttons. I had the same thing happen to me when I talked to someone at my last Fundy church. That was the nail in the coffin - I left soon after and found a church where they believe survivors and support them, rather than blaming them or making them apologize for being "rape-able" or whatever. Grrr. Angry

Speaking of random memory.......

I remember Tom Farrell speaking about a kid at the Wilds that was demon possessed. It took several men to bring him to Farrell and hold him down. Farrell said he didn't know what to do other than just quote scripture. He said that the Word of God cast out the demon.

Demon possessed? Maybe I have watched The Exorcist one too many times, but this sounds kind of freaky. Not just the demon possessed part, but the way it was "handled" by the Wilds. This wouldnt be a case of evangelist embelishment would it?

I don't know anything more about that Wilds situation than what you have said. But I am sure when you read the Gospels you notice that Jesus seems to be casting out demons frequently or at least more that I would have expected. So it seems with how frequent an occurrence it was in the Gospels that it would be possible that someone somehow could be demon possessed today, but I am a "doubting Thomas." I would have to see it to believe it in any particular case.

Fundydom in general does not acknowledge anything mystical. I use the term mystical because I believe that demon possession, manifestation of angels/demons, and unexplained spirtiual phenomena are hard to quantify in today's world. Does it exist.....you betcha.

In all of the thousands of sermons, meetings, camps, revivals et all; I have never heard a fundy preacher reference the physical manifestation of a mystical event such as Farrell did at the Wilds that night. When I think about it, it creeps me out. Was this guy just mentally disturbed or was it really a demon?

Maybe he just really didn't want to go forward Big Grin
